Don't waste time with it

Forget Bleach, forget Naruto, heck, forget Dragon Ball, Fairy Tail is the ClichéStorm for excellency. This shows, while admittedly having a good animation in the anime, suffers heavily of any semblance of originality.

Let's start from the first arc, especially the pilot and the Deliora arc, they are mostly a rip-off of One Piece, with Lucy a stand in for Nami (only her running gag inverted)and Natsu fulfill the same role as Natsu as the Unskilled But Strong Idot Hero.

Most of the characters are forgettable, their design uninspired due to being either Gonk or Fanservice incarnate. The Running Gag aren't amusing either and the friendship speeches are Anvilicious enough to make Tea cringe, and the Power Of Friendship makes the characters Boring Invincible Heroes. No tension in fights as the enemies hyped up are crushed in Curb Stomp Battles. Admittedly, at least, in this series Dragons are really badass, and there is a character, Erza, with a genuine character arc.

However, the series is dragged down by being So Okay Its Average and, when there are twists, they carry out nothing (like Lisanna's return).

Most disappointing in this point is the Tenrou arc with the promise of being a Wham Episode with deaths and reveals. While a few decent reveals about the Big Bad, they carry no relevance and only (two) villains die, while all the other prove lackster.

If it is your first Shounen, it will be good, but any frequent viewer would quickly figure out most plots and don't bother with it.

6/10

I would like to point out I LOVE Dragonball, and I know it's more of a Trope Codifier than a ClichéStorm.

However, what I mean is that Fairy Tail stands out to the eyes of a modern viewer even less than Dragonball due to the dullness of plot and characters

Wasn't the Tenrou arc non-canon? I stick with the manga simply for the sake of seeing when it gets better again. The twists in the latest chapters though were a bit confusing. I think I had to reread the latest ones just to get it.

If Fairy Tail can make more unique story events and make use of the twists that it gives out, maybe it'll be better. So far, I agree with the score. An author has to learn, or else the series ends badly.

This was written by someone who at least wanted to sound like they watch/read a lot of shounen, and who made it through the majority of the series thus far. Yet they say that frequent viewers shouldn't bother. I smell a hypocrite.

@ Rakuro Kamigama Actually it is. It's not a filler from an anime and therefore it is.

This is mostly accurate, though I disagree about the characters. They are varied and fairly well developed.

Another thing that warrants mention though is the absolutely shameless amount of fanservice. The regular series goes quite far already but the OVA are almost Ecchi. Seriously, even the 12 year old character gets ass shots and is in the naked bath and hot springs scenes.

@RakuroKamigama: The Tenrou arc is so far both canon and one of the most relevant arcs in the manga, considering it's the one revealing Zeref and Hades. It had some real potential, a shame ....

@serpentchan: to make a review of something and keep up an opinion, you have to read most of the series, also because friends of mine discuss about it. Would you like me for example to make some moronic mistake like mistaking Mystogan for Jellal. Also, sometimes the series does give some good moments.

@McSomeGuy: As of the characters... debatable. I don't see them that developed, most irritably the main characters (except Erza, as her development was constant up until the latest arc). Some have quirks which makes them look like fleshed out, but I don't see them develop through time. Most developments actually went offscreen with the 7 years Time Skip. I wanted to mention the fanservice too (they are shameless) but I had run out of everything, and as most series have Fanservice I decided to omit it. Not good, but the best I could do.

I agree, but Fairy Tail is still among the only anime shows that puts me in a happy mood. Yes, the downsides are:

  • The animation isn't high quality at all. Sometimes faces look like chicken-scratch.
  • It falls victim to every single shonen story imaginable. Editorial or publisher meddling decisions, bland 90's-anime character designs, REPEATED character designs, other designs that make no sense, shallow personalities, a magic universe that mixes historical elements with modern sensibilities, the hammered-in theme of friendship and becoming stronger, nearly no character development, too much fanservice, and just obvious foreshadowing.
  • A clear rip-off of One Piece for the designs, the most successful shonen manga right now, claiming it as "inspiration".

But there are upsides.

  • Mashima plans ahead. He reveals and adds on new back-stories and story points instead of contradicting any information established before it, making for some logical twists and convincing drama.
  • The characters' friendships are very heartwarming to see.
  • The colors are bright and the setting has great atmosphere.
  • The pacing is never boring. Fights usually last for one episode, rarely for 3, and there's a new reveal of some kind for each one.
  • The filler is, for a change of pace, actually very good!

I'd place my opinion just over the Average line. Overall, I do like it.

Gah. I accidentally posted my review 3 times! The one labeled #19406 is the latest one!

This is your opinion and I respect it, however, in my opinion:

  • Mashima has contradicted himself a few times, especially recently stating that Acnologia is the Dragon King, while in previous issues the Acnologia was the Dragon King's sworn enemy. Admittedly, some were good, but don't add up much (Lisanna)
  • Fights are anticlimatic, whih sends me into rage when a supposedly unstoppable enemy is taken down in a few pages.

Admittedly, I avoid the anime to read the manga which is slightly superior, especially in terms of plotting. Plus really, I see the friendship every bit as clichéd as most manga. It's sad that I really DON'T care about the main characters. A shame because I really wanted to like the manga, but it was just so repetitive I had to quit it for a month after the Phantom Lord arc

i overall agree with you, i only think that it has been on a steady decline since the Phantom Lord arc, and hell at least the leads had some developmenat untill the Phantom lord arc, more than any other anime i had sen back then, but i was expecting cliches, and hell, a few of them were subverted on the beginning, but it wasn't all that good to begin with, it had potential

but as it is At the moment, fairy tail is just bad, it was already gatting bad since Phantom Lord, and as of chapter 266 it ouright sucks, i wanted to see where it goes untill it ends, even if it was getting bad, but now it's just so bad it's not even worth that, it feels like a badly written fanfic of what it used to be (not helped by the fact that the writer takes suggestion from fans when it comes to story ideas)

I thought 6/10 means "average, may be liked by somebody."
