The Weird Warrior takes a...umm..."Weird" Stance!

I'm definitely no fan of Caustic Critics or the Cluster F Bomb, but this guy has enough good points to keep me coming back for more (for now anyway, I'll get back to that later). Yes, you heard it right. I genuinely enjoy the series and I think that Chris Bores does a good job.

Let's be honest though. He is a knockoff. A knockoff isn't necessarily the same as a ripoff though. A knockoff is simply someone trying to jump on the bandwagon (a lot people tried to do this when the Nerd first came out; Chris happened to be the most successful). A ripoff outright plagarizes. Is Chris also a ripoff? Well, I'll leave that for the rest of you to debate. I'm just going to focus on pure entertainment value here.

I feel that Chris has a real knack for comedy (acting, writing, editing, the works). His Contra Series reviews were priceless, as was his Monster Party video. From the ongoing, faux-serious story arcs to the hilarious supporting cast, I generally leave with a smile each time I visit his channel.

Even moreso, I enjoy his comics reviews and his top 10/top 5 videos. I think Chris's more natural personality is that of a gushing fanboy rather than a caustic one (another reason why it might be a mistake for him to copy the AVGN's format). When he reviews something he likes (or something he hasn't seen yet, but is excited about), I genuinely feel he's at his best. It's in these vids (sadly too few in comparison) that he truly comes across as One Of Us.

For bad points...well...

Even though he thankfully doesn't cuss as much as the AVGN, he still cusses too much. I really don't enjoy hearing that kind of stuff and have somewhat shied away from him, the Nerd, AND The Critic because of this. He once tried to create a no-cussing version of one of his reviews, but instead of not cussing at all, he simply edited the swears out, which gave the video several awkward cuts. Hopefully, he'll give it a more serious attempt in the near future.

Second, although he has the right to delete any comments he wants, it doesn't make him look good. It indicates he has an ego. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I have to call it as I see it.

In closing, if you're someone who can take the bad with the good, you just might enjoy his channel. Otherwise, give it a miss. Either way, you win.

Peace.

I created the Negative review below you, but I'll give you points for the positives, good review, I guess, it's certainly better than the review I made... I think...

Hi Etheru,

I'm not sure about my review being better than yours, but thanks for the kind words all the same.

Well I do think he might be better off if he accuntuated the positive too. But that doesn't excuse him cheating in games and stealing jokes and not doing the research.

Cheating in games and research failures don't bug me that much. At worst, they're frustrating. In the case of using Game Genie on Contra, I felt it was in service of the greater good: the comedy.

Aside from copying the AVGN's format, has he actually done any stealing? For example, I keep hearing people talk about him stealing jokes, but I haven't heard any real examples. Don't get me wrong. I am NOT trying to refute these claims. I'm just curious and want more details. That's all.

As for using the AVGN's format, I don't really consider that plagarism by itself. Some guy on You Tube pointed out that most late night talk shows all use the same layout/format. That's not plagarism; it's just jumping on the bandwagon. As I recall, Chris and James (The Nerd) only reviewed the same game 3 times, and, in the case of the third time, it was Chris, not James, who actually reviewed the game ("Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom") first.

"has he actually done any stealing?"

In his review of Predator, he copies wizwar100's "Fist of Fury" joke from his review of the game. His two part ROB review steal the plotline from Awesome Video Games. His Back To The Future and Odyssey reviews (Notice how he plays the games in the exact same order) are damn near identical to the one made by the Nerd... ect.

You don't like too much cussing? Uh... You may want to get off the internet then considering how much of it is on there.

I actually saw the Irate Gamer's videos long before discovering the AVGN's. I guess because of that, I didn't dismiss IG's reviews as rip offs and actually enjoyed his work. My only real complaint about the reviews is that IG is over-reliant on those crappy CGI, for the purpose of gags, openings/endings etc. They're just plain not funny, most of the time.

In regards to him being a knock off, I don't think he even steals like Glowsquid claims. I put it largely down to coincidence. Reviewers often make the same observations when they look at the same game. Also, some jokes are more obvious to make than others, so don't be suprised when reviewers make the same remarks/commentary about a work. They may not necesarily be copying. As the review correctly states, IG jumped on AVGN's bandwagon. Outside of the format and style though, IG's work is largely his own.

Naw there is some plagarism going on here but what really bothers me most about him is how much facts he gets wrong in his reviews. He looks very incompetent that way.

You got some dirt on you. Here's some more!

^^ The Back to the Future review is almost completely identical.

I'll give credit where credit is due: he doesn't steal. Anymore. His original reviews? Yeah, sure. But you have to start somewhere. That does not excuse his horribly wooden acting, cringe inducing puns, complete lack of regard for research, complaining about stuff that isn't actually bad, and the absolutely horrifically awful special effects.

The Back to the Future reviews aren't the same, they are just making the same criticisms of the same game. And I can't blame them for that. It is a very basic game with very obvious flaws. You could show this game to anyone and they would complain about the exact same issues. That doesn't mean they've been copying each other, it just means there is a consensus. Which is typical in all reviews.

As for the format, the Irate Gamer is clearly is borrowing AVGN's style and schtick, but it isn't as if they are making the exact same jokes; Irate Gamer acts out a scene where he murders the producers in the past. AVGN instead creates gags from splicing in scenes from the movie. These are the same exaggerated cries of "plagiarism!" the AVGN and Nostalgia Critic fans made of each other's shows. AVGN did not patent "sitting in front of the camera, being angry at shit". It is a common youtube format, used by many commentators. Take this one.
