You will be... er, "amazed"

By "amazed", I mean an Unusual Euphemism for "Mind Screwed and filled up with a month's worth of High Octane Nightmare Fuel". Evangelion is worth watching, but quite disturbing to see. The first twenty episodes are dark, but not as bad as the later episodes that merely show Shinji's spiralling descent into madness.

Frankly, the post-apocalyptic plot and quite disturbing imagery put me off towards the end of the series; I never watched Death, Rebirth, or End Of Evangelion, and personally (from reading plot summaries) I do not really want to. The end of the television series was confusing enough, and everyone still gets hugged and turned into Tang. Maybe. Apparently End was much more clear about the Tangification.

Evangelion is a must-see for Super Robot fans everywhere; while I am largely a Real Robot fan (Code Geass, Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Mobile Suit Gundam), I also enjoy a good physics-defying Super Robot show every once in a while (Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann) and consider myself a fan of Humongous Mecha in general. Eva is far too influential to ignore, even for the people who really, really, want to.

However, it is a psychological drama before it is a giant robot show, and a Deconstruction before everything else. Especially around Episode 20, where the series throws "grimdark" out the window and paints anything and everything black. The ending of the series is extremely confusing, and if plot summaries are any indication End Of Evangelion is not much better. Despite the decreasing budget and increasing mindscrew, Eva is actually very well-written.

If you can handle all of the grimdark and angst (which, in all honesty, makes you better off than me) Evangelion is likely very entertaining. For the rest of us, it stands as one of the most influential works in the Super Robot genre; it is best viewed followed by Gurren Lagann and/or ReDeath. To sum it all up, yes Evangelion is worth watching. It will completely change your view of the Super Robot genre. Also, if anyone tells you that giant robots are kiddy... this will change their mind. Very quickly.
