GunValkyrie

(GV is a SEGA videogame for the original XBox console.)

  • The controls really are that bad
Someday, when the Cybyx emulator is out, this will be a much more entertaining game.

  • The story is timid but interesting
Mad science, steam-punk, space, Haley's comet? Not individually unique, but well put together. And not preachy or forced. No Hideo-Kojima cutscenes. Allot of what is going on is left to your imagination. Several levels employ haunting, atmospheric music, and really cool sound effects. In several places, these sounds say interesting things about the story. I was actually stunned when I realized this.

  • The difficulty actually IS rewarding
If you can get past the weird controls, the aerial acrobatics are rare almost to uniqueness. And very satisfying.

  • Level Design
Allot of this has been done again since. Allot wasn't unique to begin with. At the end of the day, however, you will not be disappointed. Excellent level design. Difficult and very interesting.

  • For such an old title, its beautiful
Makes extensive use of specular and particle effects. Some nice shaders going on. Very neat.

  • The art-direction and general design is jaw-dropping
There are no animal/appliance descriptions that apply to some enemies and bosses. When something is so unique you can't come up with a metaphor for it, you know something has gone wonderfully, wonderfully right with the art direction. The use of color is excellent. The texturing suffers from the low memory, but is applied with a keen eye. GV uses transparency and glass/crystal like effects beautifully in a lot of places. Allot of light, electricity/energy, and all around coolness.

  • The sound design is arcade-ish, sparse, and awesome
Best described as awesome. There is allot of Audible Sharpness going on. Some very neat, spacey/sciency noises. Allot of machinery and especially train motifs. All around it wouldn't have won the game any awards, but its nice.

  • Overall style
Good or bad its very unique.

Yay/Nay? - Know what you are getting into. Gunvalkyrie is a broken game. It is also one of my favorites.
