Well, at least they tried

Long story short, it's like they had a brilliant artist come in and apply some Nothing Is Scarier in tandem with an already creepy, creaky old house, creating a brilliant atmosphere with a genuinly creepy feel. Then they had the same eight-year old that wrote the plot go through with a stamp marked "Jump Scare" and stamp away until that atmosphere was ruined. And why didn't reuniting the Woman in Black with her son work? Why didn't Kips grab the papers and go? Why is the Woman in Black unleashing her revenge on unlrelated, innocent people? The film seems to be saying "Because fuck you, that's why."

Reuniting her with her son didn't work because she's a crazy bitch.

She unleashes her revenge on innocents because she's a crazy bitch.

There's a line from Jennet in the movie where she mentions that her son was taken away from her because she was deemed mentally unfit to care for him. Because she's a crazy bitch.

Kipps didn't grab the papers and go because he didn't have all of them. When he had actually found a bunch of the papers, the tide was back in and he couldn't leave.

Except for 4/1/2011. That day lingers in my memory like...metaphor here...I should go.

This should just be called Jump Scare: The Movie. And I don't think they tried at all. They succeeded in making a pretty gothy haunted house and nice period costumes, but failed miserably at creating a comprehensible plot or interesting, mulch-dimensional characters. It was just 90 minutes of Daniel Radcliffe walking around, getting scared by things. And then the ending, which failed to resolve anything and made me wonder why I bothered to pay to watch something that has no ending. If I wanted that I could just re-watch Evangelion.

Ultrayellow, after he gathered most, if not all of the papers, he left them at the house and went back the next day. after being terrified repeatedly, and having to waste a good part of the day commuting, and risking being trapped by a storm. That's a major Idiot Ball that he didn't grab them and go.

or rather, grab them and leave when the driver got back, and take the papers with him.

I thought the first half of the movie was compelling, and the scares were genuine (at least for me). It started getting lame when I noticed he was reacting the same way to everything. Seriously, if I saw half the things he saw in that house, I would be weeping in a corner, not continuing to explore it all the while staring blankly. Then it crossed into narm territory when she started screaming and hung herself. From there on out, all I could care about was how fine Dan looked with those sideburns.

I agree with everyone here. Jennet was nuttier than squirrel crap, Harry Potter should've gotten the hell out as soon as he found that second (hidden) set of papers, and the story should've actually had a worthwhile ending. Sure, Arthur's part of the story was over (in the most bittersweet way I've ever seen), but there was no resolution for the century old story. Nothing got done except some jump scares and some brilliant sideburns.
