Probably one of the best movies I've ever seen

Looking for an uplifting movie? Then check out Les Choristes. Arguably, this is one of the most powerful movies ever to come out of French cinema. The characters are believably built up and it is very well-paced so that every scene is of importance. Some people may dislike that there are stereotypical archetypes - such as Rachin being the typical Evil Schoolmaster - but throughout the film, the characters are built up so that even at the very end you will hate him. Perhaps an exception is Mondain, but this proves that the characters are truly the cogs in the machine that is the plot. This film also has the honor of being a film to make me cry on multiple occasions - from both sad and heart-rending moments.

And I've also found that this film has a good rewatchable value, as there are throwaway details that you may have missed the first time that provide more emotional moments.

The only downside is that to understand the context, you will need a fairly good understanding of France during and after WW 2. An example being how Mathieu comments that the song Boniface sings to him is a bit outdated.
