If you read the stories the characters are sourced from, you'll be punished for having the expectation that skills/attributes will be set up and never paid off (Ashari's gloved hand, Beyond's entire existence, etc). If you've never read the other stories, the narrative's attention is split among too many characters with wildly different backgrounds to give much more than a bare-bones understanding of them, and hard-set internal rules are either forgotten or ignored for dramatic reasons (ie, Jaunes dissolving into motes of light upon death).
This review used to be longer, but it had a couple typos that couldn't be corrected without shortening it (why it could be posted in the first place if it violated the character limit, I have no idea).
