Seriously underated

I don't get all the hate and negative comments for the original series. I've always thought of it as an overlooked little gem (no pun intended).

The biggest beef people have is that it supposedly was uncertain of its audience. But to me, the idea that a magical princess in colorful costume MUST be strictly for very young girls is the same as saying a spider-bitten teenager in colorful costume MUST be strictly for very young boys.

To me, the series was pretty much in the Bronze Age mold of a basically heroic protagonist that still had to grapple with a somewhat dark world, with backstabbing politics, a genuinely scary big villain, and a bit of creepy horror and real drama thrown in.

It couldn't go to the other extreme of being a full on Vertigo-style story like Books of Magic, because it came too soon for that, but while to some it's "uncertain of its audience", to me it hits a nice middle ground between idealistic fantasy and creepy horror. Sort of like a old fairy tale, with a bit of the bowdlerizing and the Disneyfication removed.
