a shame

While this fic can be fun in a cracky, campy kind of way, I think even that falls apart in the later portions. While I'm fine with changing canon (obviously, I read fanfic after all), it feels like a lot of the canon changes here were made out of either ignorance or reckless disregard for their implication. Spoilers below.

I was truly all-in when Sasuke awakened his Mangekyou in the Land of Waves arc. Don't get me wrong, that's ridiculous, obviously, but it's the kind of ridiculous that's fun and interesting with a lot of potential. That potential is completely squandered, and Sasuke uses Mangekyou powers (the Susanno and nothing else) literally once in the last portion of the last battle of the last chapter, tens of thousands of words after his Mangekyou was awakened. Also, instead of swapping eyes with Itachi (a canon-compliant solution that would also be extremely fucking cool) they just make up a healing jutsu for Kabuto to use for their Mangekyou fatigue. I don't need to go too deep into why I think that's silly.

Scaling got REALLY goofy at times. The Sannin are describes as more or less effortlessly defeating a duo of Deidara and fucking NAGATO. This is retconned in an apparent continuity error with Natsu informing Itachi that Deidara and HIDAN are dead by the Sannnin's hands. Then, Itachi kills Hidan, and Nagato described as still alive attacking the village... but he isn't actually there. This is the worst example and I'd not like to judge the entire fic by it, but it's really jarring.

Danzo is warped to be behind literally every conflict in the entire fanfic (I'm only very slightly exaggerating) culminating in him being unceremoniously executed by a barrage of kunai as if he wouldn't have his Izanagi arm on standby at all times. He was also left alive and in a position of power WAYYYYY too long after concrete proof of Itachi's innocence is obtained.

Orochimaru and Obito are also both revealed to have been mind-controlled into all of their bad actions. Not only is that lazy, simplifying complex, morally grey characters into just "they were mind-controlled," it's also not elaborated upon in any meaningful way, especially in the case of Obito.

Overall, this isn't a terrible fic. It's very fun at times and I see why people liked it, but I can't say I did in the end.
