There do exist lots of sexual references, but what sets them apart from the crowd is that they feel like part of the characters' lives.
Then, the other thing that I find the series memorable for: the villains. For some, their uniqueness stems directly from how horrible they are as people. A small, gangly squid growing up to embody bully brutality; the vengeful, manipulative crime lord once manipulated into villainy; a genocidal dictator who made a true enemy of her own people.
But some of them, whether Octoling soldier Ruby Diorite or a couple of Inkling supporting antagonists, just want to be more regular people, which fleshes out the story instead of detracting from it.
And then there's Jack Gladio, a coward content without intelligence or freedom.

I could go off on about how the writer forgot to spellcheck in their early days, but this Splatoon fanfic series has so much more to it.
