Simply Simplistic, simply fun.

Frankly, it was a bit of a chore to get to Titanfall 2. I'm not much into online competitive games, so the first left a bit of an odd taste in my mouth. Years later, a steam discount and my friends telling me to try it finally pushed me to buy it. I went in with negative expectations, thinking it would be another call of duty in sspeeessss talking about FREEDOM and BRAVERY and SPACE FREEDOM. Oh boy, I was wrong. At most, there was an automated message in a ship, and nothing else.

This game's strength is akin to an 80's action movie, only missing the one liners. It know what it is, it knows what can cheapen the experience, so it plays honest and straightforward. You're here to pilot a giant robot and punch giant robots in the cockpit, after all, Chick. Dig. Giant Robots.

If it had tried to hide the obvious cliche points of the story, you'd be able to see it from so far away, Legolas himself would say 'Damn man, there is no earth curvature for you!?', so instead the cliches themselves pass you the popcorn and point to the screen like the Dicaprio meme. This enables the devs to focus on the gameplay, the robot, and the antagonists. The main character is flatter than Hank Hill's ass, but it doesn't matter, because your robot companion (a lovely mix of Optimus Prime with dashes of Data 'I want to understand humans') and the antagonist squad (who could be in a G.I Joe action figure toyline without rising suspicion) more than makes up to it. The campaign is sadly short, but surprisingly creative with its limited environment and story. You as a pilot can do parcour moves to headshot people across the screen, and pilot a mech with several different weapon loadouts to blow up enemy titans in slumbering but strategical combat with limited dashes and a healthy amount of Dakka. It is a nice juxtaposition of nimble fast-paced shootouts and walking tanks punching the everloving screws out of each other. And through the campaign in a far-away seemingly abandoned world, you'll go from jungles, to radioactive wastes, factories and more, in a plethora of different challenges.

Aside from the aforementioned sadly brief campaign, the final boss was sadly lackluster. Without going into spoiler territory, its one of those bosses that its so bland that you don't know its the last honcho and is surprised by the end of the game coming right after you blow it up. I'd prefer to go full ludicrous territory and embrace the eighties cheesiness with a giant enemy titan the size of a mountain, or a spaceship so full of guns, the Warhammer 40k fandom would cry 'thieeef!'. Perhaps I played too much Metal Gear Rising.

Sadly, this game won't have a sequel. We really need more mech games!
