It burns, it burn ... burns ... AAAAAAAGHH!

If you have a thing for Black Comedy, Blood will definitely make your day. From the very first moment - whether it's all the gorn, your targets' pathetic screams or Caleb's snarky quips, you'll be enjoying it all. Not even the dated graphics deter the experience. This game will bring out the hidden villain in you.

The black comedy and horror elements are incredibly well balanced. Just moments after gleefully giggling on pathetically shrieking cultists set on fire your earbuds are hit by Voice of the Legion's Ominous Latin Chanting coming from literally nowhere or even something that sounds like a tortured soul trapped in a different plane of existence. And then it's back to slaughter and cackling again.

Despite the game being basically 2D, the level layout is very creative. The Build engine has no problems with rendering multi-floored levels. Especially the second chapter contains some of the best levels with lots of things to discover like The Overlooked Hotel or The Haunting.

I can't really think of any drawbacks because Blood provides enough fun to render them mostly insignificant. You won't really miss any elaborate scenarios or dramatic events in here. This game doesn't need such stuff. The only slight problem was underwater navigation requiring jump/duck keys to move vertically ant it was quite slow so sometimes you could drown when navigating a cramped flooded sewer.

The sequel could do a little better though. The most blatant problem was obvious nerfing of most weapons. Not only that. As you proceeded further into the game, the enemies' hitpoints inexplicably increased to the point where a single Shikari which required 2 to 3 buckshot hits in the early stages could survive several Howitzer blasts in the later ones. This gets really annoying as your ammo consumption goes Up to Eleven the further you proceed.

Nightmare level pack was kind of fun though. Especially JoJo... err... Ishmael's part. He was the only one of the bunch who could make fun of his own misery and was still the most clever. On top of that, he got voice by Mike Shapiro - the same guy, who later provided his voice for Barney and G-man.
