Takes a while to get to the good stuff

Why does it seem Jane Austen forgot how to start a novel In Medias Res, after she already did that with Pride and Prejudice? Here she has a lengthy infodump before we get to know Anne. Imagine if the opening scroll at the beginning of Star Wars had run for 10 minutes.

There are also not enough characters with a sarcastic bent of mind, only the narrator.

But if you can get over the opening hump, this novel has a fantastic climax, including what I think is the best love letter in all of literature. The same scene also has a little fun with Most Writers Are Male.
