It’s all right but not the best adaptation in the series

I don’t dislike Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban but I do have certain problems with it.

Lupin still tells Harry that the reason he didn’t let him face the Boggart was since he feared it would transform into the Big Bad and is surprised by the fact that it’s not. And that’s an Adaptation Induced Plothole inasmuch as in the movie Lupin let Harry face the Boggart and witnessed the transformation into a Dementor.

The fact of Lupin knowing how the map works is never explained.

And it completely omits the entire Neville subplot. It’s also rather slowly paced in relation to the previous films.

There are some good things about it. Gary Oldman and Timothy Spall do a good job playing their characters.

And the fact that Ron responds to Hermione naïvely suggesting that Harry has nothing to be scared of at Hogwarts by pointing out that considering no one ever escaped from Azkaban before but Black did such that that’s false reassurance was an entirely logical response and a necessary statement. And once again it proves that those who claim that the films were unfair to Ron have no idea what they are talking about.

(I don’t love the scene where Ron tells Hermione that Jerkass Has a Point about Snape but if that one Out of Character moment is enough to ruin Ron for you, then you were never a fan of the character).

And I love the film’s portrayal of Sibyl Trelawney.

So it’s not bad but it falls short of the previous films.
