Good enough

I loved Ultron in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! and as such expected/wanted Ultron to be the same sort of villain in the film. But he wasn’t. He’s a quip machine who comes across as laughably evil.

Ordinary, I would have a problem with that but it seems to be justified inasmuch as in the film, Ultron is built by Iron Man not built by AntMan and weaponized by Iron Man. “What did Hulk contribute your bad attitude”. And as a result of Stark modelling Ultron’s mind after his own, like Pym did in the cartoon it’s fair to expect a similar personality. And as such it makes perfect sense that he exists solely to quip.

While his motives aren’t as well developed as they were in the cartoon James Spader still brings an impressive aura of evil to the character with his performance.

Hawkeye was one of my favourite characters in The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes! so his becoming the Scrappy in The Avengers was annoying which is why I’m glad this movie has him Rescued from the Scrappy Heap.

I love the Pietro character and his arc and catchphrase “did you not see that coming?”. As well as his heroic sacrifice. And I’m a sucker for a good rousing speech like the one Hawkeye gives Wanda after her heel realization.

I like how it develops the rivalry between Iron Man and CaptainAmerica. So I think it’s pretty good.

Of course, there are some problems with it. I watched it before I watched most of the other Phase 2 movies and there’s a certain level of Continuity Lockout. But more importantly, it completely ignores The Incredible Hulk by having Black Widow be Banner’s love interest instead of Betty Ross leading me to wonder what happened to her. It forces a moral equivalency between Cap letting the Allies experiment on him during World War II and Wanda and Pietro joining a Neo-Nazi terrorist organization. And it relies excessively upon an effort to connect the story to the then upcoming sequel Avengers: Infinity War to the detraction of the story it tells.

Do the funny quips sometimes get annoying? Yes though no more than they do in the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

So is it a great movie like SpiderMan1 was? No. Was it a bad movie? Also no.

All in all, it was good enough
