This movie is really bad.

No snarky title on this one, let's just get to it. Age of Ultron was the highly anticipated sequel to 2012's Avengers, headed by the same director Joss Whedon. With Ultron as the main villain of course.

The problems start pretty early, as we're immediately treated to a huge battle between The (somehow) reassembled Avengers and Hydra. This is already pretty rough because the last film ended on this whole "will they or won't they" for the team ever getting back together. Obviously, we knew they would but the fact that it not only happened offscreen but they established their huge tower as a base and have apparently had multiple other adventures chasing Loki's scepter (which is also an Infinity Stone now) is awkward. We're introduced to Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, who were seen at the end of Winter Soldier along with Baron Strucker. Strucker is a glorified cameo, which is a damn shame because the man is very well cast and costumed.

One issue that's prevalent throughout the film is Whedon's insistence on humor. This becomes very prominent during inbetweens like the big party at the tower. Which, frankly, hurts the characters because it starts looking like everyone is more concerned with being funny than saying anything useful. Tony for example is so heavily Flanderized in this portrayal with constant quips that you'd think he was taking up standup comedy as a side job. Another fun plotline is that Bruce and Natasha are starting to develop this awful romance where they both act like teenagers despite being in their mid 30s. Out of character doesn't even begin to cover it.

Ultron appears and, as expected, he is the best part of the film. David Spader does a fantastic job with the script and the voice modulation/CGI is lovely. Then the movie kinda forgets what it's doing. It's like a half assed Terminator script with Ultron's desire to wipe out mankind using nukes, but then that's no longer an issue because of Proto-Vision. Then after the Hulk fight, the film slows down and then turns into "How many sequels can we foreshadow?" The vibranium and Wakanda name drop for Black Panther, Thor's pointless introspective quest for Ragnarok, and Cap and Tony get into it a few times for Civil War. I will admit, it's impressive how this one film was so necessary to start the build up for Infinity War.

At the very end, Vision is born, we get more quips and another CGI army to fight the heroes, Wanda and Pietro join the team, Pietro dies, SHIELD returns(?) even though it really feels like Winter Soldier didn't even happen. And then, after Ultron is dealt with, the Avengers break up(?) and we get The New Avengers. Who will proceed to do more offscreen stuff before breaking up early on in Civil War.

In the end, this film was necessary but not very good. I would say it's one of the worst of the MCU entries to come out.
