I liked InspectorGadget1999. I think that virtually all of the problems with the movie are justified by the RuleofFunny. I think Claw’s face being shown makes sense considering that the movie is a prequel to InspectorGadget and as such it had to function as an OriginStory not only for Gadget but also Claw. I actually liked Gadgetmobile as a character despite his absence from InspectorGadget. Yes, Penny was DemotedToExtra when on the show she was the UnsungHero but she isn’t an AdaptationalDumbass. She figures out that SI stands for Scolex Industries when Gadget still thinks that it was Spanish for yes. And the best emotional scene in the entire movie and a genuinely heartwarming one was the one where Penny finds Gadget’s body trashed in the dump with the chip having been taken away which is a real Tearjerker and despite the warnings of Gadget’s scientist LoveInterest that there’s nothing they can do Penny says “He doesn’t need the chip. He’s my Uncle John” and gives an entire RousingSpeech convincing him that she needs him and that’s what causes him to reactivate. Are there some problems with this movie that can’t be justified by the RuleofFunny, yes. Was InspectorGadget better, also yes. Was InspectorGadget1999 a bad movie. No it wasn’t.
