Dragon Quest: The Adventure Of Dai is a wonderful classic anime that managed to stand as its own beyond it being a Dragon Quest property. Dai is a modest and endearing character who has an unique connection to his own father who has one of the most legitimate excuses and tragedy to his character. Pop is a coward that manages to grow more bold as the series goes on. Maam and Leone and dynamic female characters. And Hyunkel is a very cool character with a cool past. And Avan is a perfect blend of quickness and seriousness. And several, several others.
Hadlar starts off as a generic if not irritating enemy, but he manages to grow into his own by the end of his arc. The main villains Myst-Vearn, Flazzard, Kill-Vearn, Baran, the Shidei Kidan and even Vearn himself, being intimidating and memorable antagonists. Vearn is arguably one of the most intelligent, savvy and dangerous main villains in any anime or manga due to how prepared and powerful he is.
It's truly wonderful that this is getting a 2020 adaptation because now a new generation can see the entire story in its purest form and enjoy it for its rich characters.
