Just amazing

Sorjonen/Bordertown is a well-made, brilliant detective show. Fitting easily into the Nordic Noir genre, it's nothing ground-breakingly original or unique, but damned if it isn't one of the most enjoyable police procedurals I've ever watched. Much of this comes from the endearing qualities of our lead Kari; you will laugh at him, feel for him, and root for him. Sorjonen is a bit more relatable than so many other slightly odd genius detectives of the screen in that although he's a bit peculiar, he's perfectly capable of connecting with people and with his family who loves him (although Kari's life as a police detective is far from easy, and it isn't at home either). He may be vaguely Sherlockian, but this is far from, say, Cumberbatch's Sherlock whose whole shtick is being odd/a "freak"/difficult.

A strong supporting cast will help Kari confront a number of extremely dark cases and criminals, with a subplot of government corruption throughout the whole series and a recurring nemesis in the villainous Lasse Maasalo, the baddest of them all with a personal vendetta that includes our hero as one of its targets. The evil Maasalo is certainly a worthy Moriarty to Kari's Holmes. The storyline of something fishy in the past of the prestigious governing Degerman family can get a bit dragged out and hard to follow at times, but the series finale brings it all together nicely. All this transpires among Finland's distinctive architecture and stunning natural beauty, which is captured very well by the show's creators who have achieved a captivating aesthetic. As with anything, subbed is better than dubbed; watch the show in Finnish. I've fallen in love with Bordertown, and it is more than well worth a watch.
