It Gives, But It Also Takes

John Wick Chapter 2 is a fun little action film picking up right around where it left off. However, that all ends when an old associate, Santino, brings forth a marker, compelling him to repay past favors and return to his assassin ways.

One thing this movie does well is that it expands more on the Assassination World by introducing more characters and something of a social hierarchy among them. It also tries to add more style to the action scenes which can actually look very pretty, especially thanks to the lighting and music. One thing I really like are some of the call-backs to the previous movie, such as describing John as "a man of focus"; quotes like, "I'll be seeing you, John."; and, of course, killing two men with a pencil.

However, the motivation isn't nearly as strong as it was in the original film and the plot doesn't really kick off until about half an hour in. Also, if I'm being perfectly honest, Santino doesn't make for much of a compelling antagonist. Not like Viggo and Iosef.

Still, what's good is good, and I can't wait to see Chapter 3.
