The Redeemer

Most of the things I've reviewed in the last month I haven't particularly enjoyed, and considering on how much of a let down the previous season of Preacher had been, I was fully expecting that slump to continue. Then I finished Season 3 of Preacher and wouldn't you know it, the bloody thing is back on form and is currently the best show I've seen this year so far.

Whereas the last season spent way too much time hanging around, waiting for the story to happen, this one is all over the place. It starts with Jesse, the eponymous preacher, finding himself stuck at a creepy, mysterious mansion in the Mississippi Bayou, run by his similarly creepy and mysterious extended family. We don't really know what the deal is with these guys, and the mystery gradually unfolds during the course of the season. Season 3 manages to find the right balance between this main thread and a bunch of other smaller ones that all manage to give the core cast something to do, and none outstay their welcome.

One benefit of the previous slow season is that it gradually restocked the series with a ton of cool characters, who are then joined by a gang of others this season. The scene-stealer once again is the villainous pervert Klaus Starr, who exists to be perpetually aggravated by Jesse and everyone else around him. You end up feeling sorry for the guy, who can't ever seem to get anything he wants. The previous season wasted our time with a literal shaggy dog story to find God, but now the G man finally makes a proper appearance and gives something for Tulip to do. Similarly, Cassidy gets a new lease in life when he bumps into a coven of Vampire LAR Pers. The only weak character is The Allfather, a lazy Fat Bastard joke. Fortunately he isn't in it much. The rest is good story telling, and as funny as ever.

Preacher gets this year's coveted gold star for "most improvement". I don't hesitate for a second that fans of the series get on with it and catch up with this show.
