The Heroic Trio

This movie is fun. Really fun. It's like a fun train bursting through the wall of a funhouse... driven by a monkey. We get martial arts, beautiful ladies, hilarious gorn, some laughs, and even a few dramatic moments.

The Heroic Trio is a wuxia martial arts film about three heroines from various sides of the law, banding together in order to not only save children but save Hong Kong itself. The leads are played brilliantly by Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung, and the late Anita Mui.

Out of the three of them, Michelle Yeoh was the only trained martial artist but you wouldn't know that by the fight scenes. The director, choreographer, and the ladies themselves carry the action scenes with expertise. As with any movie of this genre, the stunts defy gravity and come out at a lightning pace. Despite the rapid movements of the battles, we can still clearly see what is going on, something that is sadly lacking in today's "shaky cam" fight scenes.

Also, despite the fact that the three main characters are beautiful women, we are never treated to any fanservice or gratuitous scenes of scantly clad vixens. These women are sexy enough without exploiting themselves. This might be refreshing for many viewers.

If you want to sit back, unwind, and turn your brain off for a roller coaster ride of wuxia goodness, this film is highly recommended.

The sequel sadly does not live up to the original. The story is much darker, taking away a lot of the fun. Some may accuse it of Character Derailment in some parts as well. It seemed like a sloppily put-together mess to capitilize on the original.
