Isn't Hinata supposed to be the hero of prophecy?

(Beware Late-Arrival Spoiler below)

They go out of their way to establish that she's this amazing Byakugan Princess and the ONLY ONE who can possibly stop the Tenseigan, so why is she so useless in this movie? Let's run the list:

*She get's her ass kicked off-screen by Toneri's puppets, then almost kidnapped (Naruto has to save her)

*When Toneri's puppets drop her, she forgets that one of her ninja powers is the ability to walk on walls, and Naruto has to catch her.

*When she goes with Toneri willingly in an effort to gain information, she doesn't even try to stop him from nearly blowing Naruto through the moon.

*When Toneri finds out about her betrayal, she doesn't even struggle as he possesses her mind.

*Once she's freed from Toneri by Naruto, she CAN'T DESTROY THE TENSEIGAN (you know, like the friggin' prophecy said she would?) and needs Naruto's help again.

*She's then kidnapped AGAIN, and spends the entire final fight literally locked in a cage.

*At the end, when somebody reaches out to Toneri, and helps him see the error of his ways, it's NARUTO AGAIN, and NOT her.

*Besides, if the Tenseigan is supposed to be Ōtsutsuki chakara combined with Hyuga eyes, and she's established to have Hamera Ōtsutsuki's blood in her veins (hence why she can resist its chakara drain), WHY CAN'T SHE USE THE TENSEIGAN?

I'm not asking for Hinata to upstage Naruto completely, but when they spend so much time shilling her character her uselessness gets pretty hard to swallow.

The film's treatment of Hinata is my biggest gripe with this movie, but other than that its fairly decent. They do a passable job of showing Naruto's growing affection for her and the two sequences at the end between the two (first of them running, then of their marriage in silhouette) are beautifully animated. I also like a lot of the cameos from fan favorite characters that show up periodically to do something awesome briefly.

Fair warning though - there's also a lot of hate about this movie. Toneri is kind of wasted as a character. They only briefly touch on his history and motivation, which makes his redemption at the end feel hollow.

The only real fight sequences besides Naruto vs. Toneri are against a Giant Crab, and some faceless puppet army that doesn't really put up a fight. The Genjutsu sequence is pretty hackneyed, the Hanabi search drags on a bit, and most of the coolest moments from Shikamaru, Sai, and Sakura happen off-screen.

Still, this is far from the worst Naruto movie. If you're a Naru Hina shipper, and you don't mind how the series treats its Action Girls, this movie may be for you.

This review, like many others, suffers from spending too long griping about one aspect of it. 3,000 characters are enough to write a good review, but only if they\'re well spent, which may be why some people complain about the limit rather than use their word count more wisely.

Regarding Hinata, I\'d say her initial poor performance against Toneri is largely following the trend of how most Shonen protagonists don\'t exactly do all that well at the beginning of a new story arc or movie. For example, Naruto, after defeating Pain, was at a disadvantage during his and Sakura\'s short fight with Omoi and Karui (granted, neither side went all-out). As for the Tenseigan, not only was Hinata essentially unable to move when Toneri telekinetically grabbed her, it\'s indicated that they need both Naruto\'s chakra reserves and Hinata\'s special chakra to do it. Similarly, during the last scene with Toneri, Hinata also reaches out to him, even after everything he did to her.

I\'ll concede that the Genjutsu part was a bit weird, but at least on theory, it had a sound purpose- Naruto remembering some of his most defining moments with Hinata (although I\'d argue that meeting her before the finals and her getting through to him after Neji\'s death should count), and seeing them in a new light now that he\'s coming to understand how she feels about him.

I understand that you disliked the movie, and you showed at least some of the reasons why. Ideally, though, a review should be more than an expression of the reviewer\'s opinion, but an argument of whether or not someone who hasn\'t seen it should do so. As such, this review, which was poorly organized, overly focused on one aspect of the movie, and contains unnecessary spoilers, didn\'t serve that purpose very well, and is unlikely to be very convincing to people who did not see it.

@Valiona No, I hink at this point is that you have issues with people complaining about Naruto. I personally was danm right expecting you to reply.

First of all, I never complained about the word count limit. This review said exactly what I wanted it to say - an enumeration of my biggest issue with this movie.

Furthermore, I\'d like to point out that a review is ONLY the opinion of the critic. I\'m not a journalist, so I don\'t have any obligation to be unbiased. I\'m a Naruto fan, with a favorite character, and a bunch of story tropes I want to see. Naturally, my opinion won\'t reflect everyone\'s but it is my opinion.

Anyway, the thing is, if Hinata\'s initial poor performance really was indeed due to that Shonen trope of the hero losing initially, why did Hinata do literally nothing later? Like I said, she spends the entire final fight LITERALLY IN A CAGE. And no, Naruto doesn\'t need her Chakra to beat Toneri - by the time she gives him her Chakra, the fight is over and the only thing left to do is for Naruto to reach out to Toneri. And no, Hinata is not the one doing the reach-out; that\'s Naruto, like it always is, and Hinata is only present at the end to invite him to the earth AFTER his Heel Realization.

To clarify my review, I don\'t actually hate all of it, and the other negative points that I glossed over aren\'t big deals for me. But make no mistake - Hinata\'s only real role is to be a Damsel in Distress, and that\'s what I hate about this movie.

I mean... you\'re not wrong, Tonic, but he\'s just trying to help you be a better critic. His point is that writing a broader-based review, rather than harping on the one thing that ruined the movie for you, is more in the spirit of an actual \"review\" rather than a \"rant.*

SpectralTime is right. While some people would consider not using Hinata well to be a deal-breaker and agree that the film falls into this based on what you said(obviously, neither applies to me, but that\'s neither here nor there), resulting in them not seeing it, most people are more interested in hearing about other things, such as the plot, characters, action and NaruHina romance. If people don\'t care all that much about Hinata\'s performance in action scenes, they\'re unlikely to care about what you have to say, and if you don\'t manage to convince them, they likely won\'t glean anything useful from your review. By providing broader coverage, you make the review useful to more people, rather than just the people who agree with you and/or care about the same things that you do.

I also wasn\'t accusing you of complaining about the word count, merely saying that some people (which isn\'t meant to imply you) complain about the limitations they have rather than try to adapt to them.

I feel like the movie failing to follow through with one of it's major points to be a reasonable criticism. If you say it can be a deal breaker then that in itself makes it a valid topic for a review. Personally I dind't like the movie in general, however my biggest gripe is how badly the romantic aspect is handled. For a movie who's biggest selling point was that it was a story about love and romance, it is a valid review structure to point out how one thinks it failed at that.

The film is almost 2 years old so enough time has passed that the spoiler rule only applies to big reveals. That's why we can talk about more openly about movies like 50 Shades of Gray, Age of Ultron, Jurasic World, etc.

marcellX,

I\'ll concede that would be a reasonable criticism, but the reviewer was talking about Hinata\'s fights rather than the romance (the reviewer said that the film \"did a passable job\" at that).

Just because you can mention spoilers doesn\'t mean that you should, because these reviews are generally for the benefit of those who have not seen/read/played/etc the works in question, and are generally looking for an indicator of whether or not it\'s good rather than a full summary of the story and how it ends..

@Valiona

The point is that not delivering on a major point the movie implied on, in this case, acording to the author, Hinata\'s contribution and usefulness; can be a reasonable critic on the movie. I used romance as a personal example, to add to my argument and nothing more.

Reviews used to only be made on paper\'s tabloids and obviously, as soon as possible. With the rise of the internet and \"amateur\" reviews, came a new dinamic of reviewing \"old\" things, which in turn aren\'t as restrictive given that they\'re not under the same circumstances (release date). This meant that some of the responsability fell on the readers if they\'re search was from something relatively \"not new\". You have to be very careful right now with revealing too much about The Girl on the Train or The Accountant, but have more leaway on say, 007 Spectre, were one could say you still shouldn\'t reveal major twists, unlike say Superman kills Zodd, Darth Vader is Luke\'s father, rosebud was a sled, etc.

@Valiona

Tv Tropes has a name for this kind of thing: Late Arrival Spoiler. I warned about that at the top of the review. Frankly, the main reason I wanted to write this review wasn't to be a wannabe critic, it was to criticize where I felt the movie failed, so if I were to blank out all the spoilers there'd be nothing left to write.

Like Marcel X said, it's been two years. If you want an actual, journalistic review, those have been around already. The purpose of the reviews section of Tv Tropes is for amateur pieces and people's opinions.
