A lot of fun to read, if a bit flawed.

As the title says, I have a lot of fun reading Heretical Edge. I enjoy the characters, who I find to be very interesting, and how they interact with and play off each other, the setting is fascinating, the moral nuances are compelling, and the weapons, creatures and magic are really cool.

Flick is a great viewpoint character. Her narration is entertaining, she's easy to root for, and I think she's flawed enough to keep things interesting. Her teammates are all great fun too.

I love how the story plays around with expectations. Nothing is ever how it's initially presented. Nothing. You can't ever trust the first round of exposition, and while certain plot developments can be predictable, others will definitely take you by surprise.

Fair warning: While the story is usually light hearted, there are moments of extreme and occasionally disturbing darkness. Nothing worse than what you might find in, say Worm or The Dresden Files, but certain parts are definitely not for the faint of heart.

There are flaws. A bit too much information is relayed through Word of God rather than on the page, a natural consequence of a first person perspective in such a complicated world. The pacing in the first arc is a little off. Coincidences start to pile up at times. There's enough justification and explanation that they're not quite contrived, but it is noticeable.

The villains are sometimes a bit one-dimensional. This is not to say there isn't some level of complexity to them, but many of them seem underdeveloped in comparison to the protagonists. Although it's nice to have villains that are just straight up evil sometimes, so maybe this isn't quite a flaw.

If you want to give it a shot, I recommend that you read through the first two arcs at the very least. If you're not interested at that point, stop. If you're on the fence, go on to the next two or three arcs.

But I'm pretty confident most will like it. Maybe you won't, but I sure as hell do. All in all it's a thoroughly enjoyable read. I for one have a lot of fun reading it.
