Crown of Stars begins with a nigh-immortal godlike being coming appearing out of nowhere to Shinji and Asuka, offering to pretty much fix all of their problems, and whisks them away to his own empire where they recover from the events of Throne of Bayonets and NGE. It's that kind of fanfiction.
If that hasn't turned you off then A Crown Of Stars is a well written fic that only gets better with time, and provides a much needed WAFF injection to the series. The writer does a good job keeping the OCs out of the limelight, their role largely dedicated to enabling the main characters to do their thing.
The story is currently on hold at the moment while the author finishes his other story, which is being regularly updated. If you feel canon was too depressing, and can sit through the -admittedly choppy- first few chapters, then this is the story for you.
