This is the review of Aoharu x Kikanjuu anime (which does not include the manga).
First thing's off: If you are looking for the Ouran High School Host Club version of Airsoft (which a lot of viewers had seem to watch the show under that impression), you probably wouldn't like this anime as while it has it's moments early one, it can only lead to disappointment. If you want a fun / sportsy (and sometimes dark) sports anime, maybe this is your pick.
Plot: 7.5/10
It follows a pretty common sport's formula. Overall, there's nothing special about it but it does good in build-up and forshadowing if you're observant enough. The only other problem is only one other team besides Team Toy Gun Gun was featured as 'known' opponents (but that's what happens when you try to condense a sports series to 12 episodes). Ending seems to be open ended, either hinting at a second season or reading the rest in the manga.
Characters: 8/10
I feel this is one of the show's selling-points. The characterization of Toy Gun Gun starts off as very cliche but it starts to delve away from that once Airsoft becomes more focused. The interactions between Toy Gun Gun is often amusing and endearing. Outside of Toy Gun Gun, we have the rival team and Kanae who also get unique characterizations and quirks, which is always fun to watch. As mentioned at the start the review, it is more of a sports series so other than a few, it's more of a nakuma focus.
Music: 7/10
Pretty average. Sometimes, the OST would mesh really well (though too quite without headphones) and would sound awesome. Otherwise it either doesn't stand out or it can be unfitting. Team Toy Gun Gun sings the opening (which eventually grew on me) while Hotaru sings the ending. They had a special ending for episode ("Tic Tac"), animation included, but they never used again which was such a waste.
Animation: 9/10
It was really well done. I found it hard to catch poorly animationed scenes and the matches were crisp and fluid.
Overall: 8.3.
Watch it if you're into Airsoft (as it's one of the few animes that look into it's gameplay)/ Survival Games or just want to watch something quirky or sports related. Don't watch it if you're hoping to watch the gender reveal drama or reasons mentioned in the second paragraph, probably won't enjoy it (but are free to try).
