... what?

It's been a good while since I last played Snakewood, but I still remember it clearly. Most particularly, for it being the first ROM Hack I've ever played. The game follows a Kitchen Sink Included formula, some things good, some things bad, but unfortunately Too Many Cooks Spoil the Soup and leave a So Bad, It's Good game as a result.

Let's start with the good parts:

  • The events - some of them are actually pretty good ideas (Regardless of difficulty), like a Hopeless Boss Fight or two (Although you can only see one coming), the puzzles requiring a pokemon with Thundershock to power up an elevator or one with Transform to open a lock whose key is nowhere to be found, the murder investigation, the battle with the troll with over 6 Pokemon, the late-game puzzle that resembles Ecrutreak Gym's and a few more I may have forgotten.
  • Narm Charm is very common here, either through modified sprites, text-only, or both (The Pikachu head on a stake at the beginning).
  • You don't know what the next Shout-Out will be. Expect Pokemon Diamond and Jade characters in this!

However, there are some really serious flaws in this:

  • The story makes absolutely no sense. There are moments in which you think Cutlerine just scripted whatever came to his head, and if you don't get lost in it, you should be sent into an asylum. Really. In several points in the game you end up wondering who is in which side.
  • Retypings, stat changes, fake moves, fakemons and post-Gen III pokemon, although I will give the zombie pokemon, Denjuus and A Monster a pass. They break the game experience, and in this case in particular, several are ugly and/or unbalanced like that nightmarish Fighting/Flying thing with Speed Boost and access to Swords Dance.
  • The game feels rushed in the later parts. Especially in terms of difficulty.
  • A lack of good farming spots. It does not make the game harder - it slows the game to a crawl.
  • I personally disliked the starter selection.
  • It's very easy to get lost in the sewers.

But as I said, it's good in its eccentricities but it fails in some of the most basic things of a Pokemon hack. It's definetly unforgettable, though... well, unless a better ROM hack with the same theme comes out.
