Fun concept, bad execution

(Mainly about the anime. I haven't read the original series, only briefly read parts of it)

When I first heard about this, I knew I had to see it. Nintendo-Sega console wars retold through personified characters? Sounds great! Sadly, it ended up far below my expectations.

This series is about the Nintendo and Sega console wars, retold with characters representing game franchises. The Ninteldo and Segua kingdoms have been at war for years, and Ninteldo has most of the power - until the Segua army gets a new recruit, Gear (Sonic) who instantly shows impressive skills and potential. Starts off good enough... but then it all goes downhill.

First off: it was terribly rushed. Only 3 24-minute episodes was a warning sign - how can they retell this story in that amount of time? (Turns out they didn't, which I'll get back to later). It moves way too fast with little room for development. Characters were mostly uninteresting, there wasn't a single character I ended up really caring for. They were either bland, flat, annoying, jokes wore out(Tetris jokes about "sticking things into holes") or barely showed up once towards the end.

Also, remember how I told you how it was about the Nintendo-Sega console wars? Well, that's how it's introduced, but towards the end of episode 2, they end up fighting Taito characters instead, then they go home and never end up meeting Ninteldo. Ninteldo show up for maybe 3 minutes total during all 3 episodes. When it's been building up to "hey, we're going to fight these bad guys" and they end up fighting another group of bad guys out of nowhere, it's hard not to end up a bit disappointed.

It also seemed too serious. Sure, it's supposed to be a console "war", but it doesn't really work that well with a series parodying Nintendo and Sega. Not saying it can't have serious or dramatic moments, but I think it would have worked better as a more fun, light-hearted series with some serious moments, rather than the other way around. "Dramatic" moments didn't have much of an impact and seemed like a cheap attempt to make it more "dark".

As for the good parts - it had some clever jokes/references that made me laugh and go "oh, I see what you did there!" several times. Some cool character designs too. However, this alone can't save the series.

In short: A good, fun concept, but terrible execution.
