Kung Fury - A Skin Deep Afair

To quote a friend of mine: "Kung Fury's tribute to camp 80s cinema was only really skin deep."

Kung Fury is...okay. It starts out strong, but it seems to not understand that part of a good parody is characters who play themselves straight in a world gone mad. Airplane! is a good example of that. Instead, the entire movie is spent going 'look how ridiculous is this!' I would've preferred it if it focused on being an eighties parody rather than a 'so-bad-it's-good' movie under the guise of an eighties parody.

[SPOILERS AHEAD]

While the idea of a Kung-Fu master Hitler is brought up, we don't actually see him do any Kung-Fu. This means that the climax isn't anything close to what I expected: Kung-Fu showdown between Kung-Fury and Kung-Furher. Instead, most of the kung-fu is against a bunch of Nazi mooks who don't really do anything but get killed, while Hitler himself is anything but a kung-fu master.

Kung-Fury himself isn't that interesting of a character, and most of the other characters rely on their 'ridiculous factor' rather than being characters (triceracop anyone?). The only one I can think that is a parody of a character from the eighties is Hackerman, because there are a lot of movies in the eighties where people hack in completely unrealistic ways.

Overall, it's worth the watch, but it feels unfocused. It should've either been a straight up kung-fu movie, or a straight up eighties parody, not a weird fusion of both.
