Really cool and enjoyable - well done, Rovio!

Much like with Pixar’s excellent “Monsters University”, I didn't expect much from “Angry Birds Go”. But, just like with that movie, I'm very impressed. This is an awesome app, one of the most addictive I’ve ever played.

Instead of trying to lazily compete with the likes of Mario Kart, Angry Birds Go makes you work extra hard for the rewards. The races are quick, straightforward and sometimes rather relaxing, and they feel instantly satisfying due to the good sense of speed, the simple controls, the generous amount of prize money you receive from winning races or collecting on the track (which can be doubled every time by purchasing a recommended coin doubler) and the general feeling of steady achievement. You even get decent amounts of money from failing races as well, encouraging you to keep going. Fully upgrading your vehicles take time, but it always feels rewarding when you do so.

Because the game is focused largely on pure driving instead of power-ups, it rarely feels cheap or overly chaotic. Even though the game mostly involves racing the same tracks over and over, with every race different sections and shortcuts are open and closed, meaning you have to keep alert when you attempt them. Every character has their own special ability as well, and as you unlock them you can apply strategy in each race by switching between them. There are also two additional racing types, both challenging: Time Boom (Get to the finish before time runs out while avoiding blocky hazards) and Fruit Splat (destroy enough fruit before passing the finish line) and both of these allow one to engage in valuable training for the harder races. There’s even a clever aspect to the game that allows it to not become overly tiresome: Each character needs to take a nap after a while, giving you the option to either pick a different character or exit the game and return later. This gives you a good reason to take a break instead of grinding all day, extending gameplay and making it feel fresh each time.

The visuals are also sharp. The racetracks are quirky, colourful and sometimes deliciously retro in their design, and the characters are all full of life. While the game's music isn't anything special, the strong sound effects make up for it. Overall, Angry Birds Go is highly addictive, consistently charming and packed with plenty of challenges and unlockables.
