An oddly good cartoon

Breadwinners placed itself on TV through the most unexpected events.

After showcasing its short at a New York bar, the creators decided to place it on YouTube, just for placing it on YouTube. And within about a week, the short became featured on Cartoon Brew, got praised by many people, and was said to have potential to become a series (on CN at least). Suprisingly, while one of the creators was requested to work on a pilot for Nickelodeon's Animated Shorts Program, he decided to revamp his old short and present the new one to the executives... and it became a series.

An odd development, honestly. But moving on from that. For the show itself, there is a mixed bag that fluctuates in enjoyability.

For the good parts, there is this animation with a metronomic pacing. Most of the show goes by a beat and would make you tap your foot to notice it. The visuals resemble "old-school" video games. Heck, they even make it look like a video game with the two main guys wearing P1 + P2 colors, the sound effects emulate those from noteworthy video games, and the backgrounds all pixelated. And also, this cartoon feels like it would belong in The Nineties with the other Nicktoons, as it's filled with clever zaniness and animals that don't look like animals Joe Murray must be proud.

For the bad parts, the humor is mostly centered around butt jokes, and that would tiring very quickly. Several plots have been rehashed (i.e. "Driving Test" plot; "Love Potion" plot; "Procrastination" plot; etc.); so it would make show somewhat predictable. The main protagonists Sway Sway and Buhdeuce can get very annoying with their idiocy. And with the influence of trying to be more like a Nicktoon, the show wouldn't stick to the initial charm of the original short.

But all in all, Breadwinners would have something out for you to enjoy. It can be uniquely charming and hilarious, but it can also be unamusingly gross and immature. People on the Internet say it's bad; others, most of them off, say it's good. It seemed to have taken notability through YouTube, but it has actually taken it through normality.

With the attributes and reception this show receives, it is undoubtfully... odd.
