Re-review: My new opinion of Buckley

If you read my original review of Canada's angriest citizen, you were aware that I praised his work greatly:

"So, why do I love ADOB so much? It's simple - he's almost always right. In his videos, he exposes the worst aspects of society and people, and does it in a way that's both humorous and truthful. Buckley is one of the best people on the Internet. When I hear his cynical voice and his punishing comments towards those who deserve it, I cannot help but smile nastily with satisfaction."

But I'm afraid that over the last few months, my opinion of Buckley has greatly decreased. I used to look up to him and regard him as one of the Internet's most logical and inspirational comedians, but just like what happened with Mr. Doug Walker, Buckley has over time lost a lot of what made him great.

So, what's wrong with Buckley nowadays? Is he not funny anymore? Is he running out of ideas? Is his perpetual misery now overly exaggerated to the point of becoming obnoxious? All three. A sizable majority of Buckley's newer videos are either troublesomely mediocre/forgettable or just downright lousy. His most recent video as of this review, his Musical Autopsy of OMI's "Cheerleader" is so disastrously unfunny that it left me gobsmacked.

Like I mentioned, the element of cynicism and misery prevalent in his videos just doesn't work anymore. Like many people on YouTube, Buckley has Flanderized himself. He started out as a grumpy and harsh but constistently comical, and managed to keep up this exact persona for most of his online career. Starting from this year, however, he's upped the grumpiness and harshness but failed to mix most of it with good, original humour. His jokes are getting predictable, his voice is grating, his complaints about things are increasingly trivial (and hypocritical) and his more frequent cursing now sounds childish, particularly his F-bombs. Even his fans, who used to be a mostly decent bunch, have over time mutated into yet another moronic and over-infatuated Internet fandom.

I might still watch Buckley's older and better videos, but I think with his newest video, he's finally arrived at the hazardous waters of that dreaded shark. I used to be excited for his weekly content, but my interest in his material is severely declining. He's far more of an asshole than he claims he is. He's now almost insufferable.

I don't usually watch this guy that much, but I think he's entertaining and he brings up a lot of good points.

Those two things are what I look for in ranters and reviewers and Buckley is no exception.

I think he's brilliant. He's one of those people who's always there to remind me that all is not lost. And thankfully his fanbase is pretty smart, too. At least, compared to other fanbases.

The comment sections on his videos are cesspools of idiocy though. That's coming from a now-former fan - I'm dissatisfied with some of his opinions, and the comments on his videos make me want to eat a gun.

I do get your views on him, though - he has some great videos, and I love hearing him dissect songs. I think my favorite episode from this year is the Buzzfeed one.

"The comment sections on his videos are cesspools of idiocy, though".

Sometimes, but not nearly as much as the cesspools of idiocy on videos by You Tubers like Smosh, PewDiePie and How To Basic.

For the most part, the users agree with Buckley and give their own opinions/interpretations as well. I rarely have a problem with Buckley's fans. I only hate the psuedo-fans who post on his "Top Ten Worst Songs of 20xx" videos, because they don't know who Buckley is and just want to scream their head off at people who don't like rap music.

The problem I have with a lot of his commenters is that if you express even the slightest bit of disagreement (and I don't mean the "This sucks! You're worse than cancer" comments, but well-reasoned disagreements with something he says), then you get a bunch of people jumping on you and telling you you're wrong, often by just parroting what Buckley says.

I wonder if these people realize you don't have to agree with everything he says. Buckley is a commentator giving his opinion, not an authority figure. Yeah, there's the stuff he says that are lessons to live by (e.g., don't drink and drive, don't beat your partner, etc.), but most of the other things are entirely up to you. If you want to donate to Kickstarter, reminisce about the '90s, or enjoy a song that he puts on his worst lists, that's your decision and it will hurt nobody.

In reply to the previous comment: Actually, I now agree that many Buckley's fans are pretty annoying. Still not as bad as many other fans but a lot of them are irritatingly aggressive.

I'd say I agree with about 90% of Buckley's videos. The other 10% I either partially agree with or disagree with. Here are some examples where I disagree:

Santa Claus: Apparently, it's bad for children to believe in Santa, because it makes them grow up to be stupid. Incorrect, many children simply stop believing and move on with their life.

Apologies For Comedy: I agree with Buckley that comedians shouldn't have to apologise to the offended, but the Onion was right to apologise to Quvenzhane Wallis. They called her the filthiest word in the English language on Twitter where it was read by loads of people, and it came across not as a joke but as an attack.

Music Fans: I agree that many people take music way too seriously and need to stop fighting over it, but it's okay to defend music sometimes, just as long as you don't come off as a jerk to people.

Marriage: Buckley disagrees with all marriage. Without marriage, we wouldn't have family units and the world would be a very confusing place as a result.

Also, yes, you can enjoy any song he puts on his worst lists. A little nostalgia is fine, but only in small doses (I cannot stand hyper-nostalgic people who have to compare everything to their precious childhood) as for Kickstarter though... well, it's up to you. Donating money to help make a potato salad is pretty dumb though, you have to admit that.

I feel like there was a point where Buckley got too full of himself. Like I won't go as far as to say that he expects everything he says to be taken seriously, he's always been facetious in parts of his videos, but it's like he - or his character - has been sounding a lot more "done" than before. He sounds fairly serious about what he says, instead of a guy running his mouth and having fun with his topics. He sounds like his own played-up statements have gotten to him.

I dunno. Maybe I grew up, or maybe whatever I saw in his earlier videos doesn't exist any more.

Man, I started a thread in the "It Just Awes Me" forum back when I was into his stuff. Ain't that an Old Shame.

Let's be honest here, Buckley's fanbase is (for the most part) fu-king toxic and self supporting. In the few videos that I disagree with Buckley on (The gun topics) had several of his fans leaping on my disagreement by just parroting what Buckley said.

Hell, in addition to that, one of the comments on the drone video had Buckley repeatedly mocking pro-gun people and ignoring the more logical comments. But nah...

Yeah, I really hate Buckley's fans now. I hate how a lot of them decide to change their opinion's just to match Buckley's. Also, I like I said in the review, I think that Buckley's anger is now too exaggerated and whiny to be funny. His arguments aren't balanced anymore and his hypocrisy got on my nerves.

I still find Buckley hilarious from time to time. Sure I don't watch him as much as I used to, but overall he is still decent at best.

His fanbase on the other hand...

Welp, the fans have become rabid morons like what Gucci Piggy 90 said. Fuck Buckley.

Agreed, dannylamb456. Awful fanbase. Mindless, babbling, drooling drones deficient of even a shred of original thought, incessantly worshipping Buckley's every word as if his opinions are nothing but sheer truth (except when he's talking about gun control). I just watched his "Worst Songs of 2015" list, and it was completely unfunny all the way through, a snorefest. I gave him one last chance with that video, but that's it. Buckley sucks ass now. He isn't funny, witty, clever or even interesting anymore. Nothing he says entertains me now. He's just a whiny douche recycling the same vulgar jokes ad nauseum. I don't even want to watch his older videos. In fact, fuck YouTube altogether. 99% of the site stinks to high heaven nowadays. Almost all of it is cancerous, obnoxious, predictable, soul-destroying trash.
