A Unique and Overlooked Show

I'd say the main factor that led to this show's downfall, besides the failure of its companion trading card game from Denmark, is that it was primarily broadcast on CW 4 Kids, a more obscure Saturday morning network where some shows with potential seem to go to die. I was really sad to see it go, being a pretty big fan of it at the time. It's a show with a pretty unique flavor and a lot of untapped potential at its cancellation, though I can understand why some people wouldn't get into it.

Although, one complaint I hear a lot from people who dislike the show is that It's just a ripoff of Yu-Gi-Oh or Digimon, which I find really unfair. Sure, the concept of watching monsters do battle isn't unique, but watching players battle as the monsters themselves does seem quite original and interesting to me. Instead of watching people bark marching orders at their monsters, we get to see players use the strengths and weaknesses of their creatures in conjunction with real environments, using strategies that might actually get you thinking (hell, it even tricked me into buying the cards). Yes, hearing the players utter endless streams of in-game nomenclature can get annoying, but if that doesn't bug fans of Yu-Gi-Oh then it shouldn't bug you here.

Most of all, I found the style of animation and the character designs to be really interesting and unique, or at least until they Japanimated it. This did lend some intensity to the fight scenes, but I felt it took away a lot of what made the show memorable.

I will say that some of the writing is pretty hammy (at least for the humans), seemingly on purpose. The human characters, and some of the creatures too, crack so many puns that you'll think you're watching Batman and Robin, though this dies down over time. They seem to save the more in-depth dialogue and storytelling for the more interesting creatures . The way their world and inter tribal conflict are portrayed is pretty interesting as well, with no faction being pure evil or good but concerned for its own survival.

Overall, I'll say that your mileage might vary on Chaotic, but it's at least worth a look see. For me, It was tons of fun and addicting to watch, and it might do the same for you if given the chance. Though I may have moved on to other shows since its cancellation, Chaotic will always hold a special place in my heart.
