Whatever You Do, Don't Believe the Hype

For a time, I was fascinated with Buckley. His angry opinions about the world sucked me in, and I watched video after video. But something nibbled at my enjoyment, something that only became exacerbated by the obnoxious praise the man received in comments. That nibble turned into a gnawing I couldn't ignore. At the time, I felt the correct phrase for it was "straw man", and since I haven't given this histrionic agitator a moment of my time since, I'll stick with that.

This guy isn't worth watching. All he does is rage against things he doesn't like. It's a shtick that gets old fast, and is only tolerable if all you want is validation for opinions you already hold. This guy only builds up his personal boogeyman to tear them down in the most obnoxious way, all while pulling the wool over people's eyes that he's brilliantly skewering something important. Clearly, there's a market for this, and far be it from me to stop the blind leading the blind.

Avoid at all costs.

I get what you mean. His videos often have him imitating an opposing side of an argument with a whiny voice, which gets really old. Having seen the commenters on his videos, I can see why he does it - but it does get old nontheless.

But then there are videos where he takes a surprising swerve and takes the side people don't expect, and will defend something everyone dislikes, i.e. #Selfie by The Chainsmokers (pointing out that it's pretty blatantly tounge-in-cheek). It's not so surprising any more because he does it every third video or so, but when it was less common, i.e. around his Thrift Shop review, I thought it was fresh.

Honestly, I can say that I am still fairly biased in Buckley's favor - I don't watch his videos regularly any more and avoid videos where I assume he's going to be shitty to women, but I am a fan of his humor and to be honest I really like the sound of his voice. I'd say a few of his videos are alright to check out, like one of his earlier Worst Songs of 20XX lists, but I get what you mean about him straw-manning his arguments and such.

Agreed. Buckley claims to be a comedian, but recently he's become a full fledged ranter, and not particularly a fun one to watch. He's recently been on a rampage of sorts, tearing down those who he deems idiots by destroying arguments they never/barely used. And, if you disagree with him, his fans will blindly beat you down. And his humor is really starting to get predictable.

I may not agree with everything Buckley says, but can I just say this - some of his rants are seriously awesome, being spot on about why certain types of people and fans of things can be disgustingly obnoxious. For example, his recent video on metalheads. I am an complete agreement that an awful lot of metalheads are some of the most sickeningly arrogant, elitist and hateful music fans around, waging war upon other genres, fighting over sub-genres and bashing any metal artists that dare make an album aimed at a broader audience. When he makes videos like that - ones that tell the sad truth about groups of people who deserve to be shamed for their rotten behaviour - I love 'em. :) I am in full support of Buckley for that reason.

I've just seen two of his videos. Hated them. I just really hate it when commenters call everyone who isn't them "stupid" or "full of bullshit". Even when relatively calm, he spewed far more bile than I could tolerate. Besides, he just wasn't funny at all.

To each their own, but I think he's hilarious. Buckley is one of my favourite You Tubers. A very intelligent man, despite his angry-sounding videos, who is almost always right about what he says. I disagree with him on occasion, like with his Easter video. I always thought that one was off the mark.

After watching 3 of his videos, I'm going to agree with your opinion of him Blacknumber.

I haven't been enjoying his recent videos, but I still love his deadpan delivery.

With one of his recent videos being a reactionary one about a kid who duct taped a Glock to a quadcopter, he proceeded to demonstrate how little he understood how laws work when dealing with criminals who have guns.

Not only that but with his starting slide outright showing more of his ignorance is irritating.

To be fair, I'm starting to get a bit sick of him too, and I wrote that very positive review of his work. I respect him, but his videos are getting rather samey now and he needs to cheer up just a little bit more.

The thing about Buckley that turns people off is that he's a harsh guy, who offers brutal honesty about what he talks about. That's why some people listen to him and can't understand how he can by liked - because his views on things are harsh, dark and sometimes depressing. He doesn't sugarcoat anything. The end of that Christmas songs Musical Autopsy for example, where he talks about children self-harming... it's just downright cruel, but it's sadly true, some bullied kids do that.
