It was, in fact, good

The fact is, I liked it. Yes, I wish there was more stuff done right and a lot more detail, like the romance between Sokka and Yumi, the Southern Air Temple, and so on, but I enjoyed it.

The beginning was annoying and not good. However I felt it ended strong. So many people expect an exact clone of the series (if it's exactly the same in every respect, except being live action, then no, it wouldn't have been worth seeing) too bad for such unimaginative people it was different. There were surprises, characters had apparently different interpretations leading to them being different characters. So if you don't like change, don't bother going to see it. Yes, if they change it too much it won't be what it's based on. This is a judgemont call that should be left to every individual.

However, if you like being surprised and things change, go for it. Yes many things were changed. I liked it, while the Earth Bending scene was rediculous, compressing so many scenes into a length of time children could sit through (need I remind people of Avatar's original intended audience?) was done incredibly well. Zhuko and Azula were aged (which is good, in my humble opinion). Not to mention some of the scene from the serious I didn't like were a bit glossed over (the 'We're your family now' from the sourthern air temple, it's still there, but impressively and thankfully put in the background).

At first I also had issues with the race thing. However I was impressed, Sokka especially. The actor was perfect for the role. I also love how everyone keeps trying to make an issue with the race thing. It wasn't a problem in the least. Also, Azula, very creepy, very good.

Ultimately, considering it's, how many episodes? Compressed into a single movie it's good. Even not considering that, it's good, at least decent. Some bits were rediculous, but over all I enjoyed the move. I'm also happy with the changes.

Her name was Yue first of all, and if I'm going to see a movie about Aang, I want a movie about fucking Aang! You're making an adaptation not a retelling, not a different interpretation, he was supposed to make a condensed version of the show, not a shitty movie with the faintest aroma of Avatar. If I walked into a Warhammer 40 K movie, I don't want a lighthearted romantic comedy!

And you think Sokka was a good actor, seriously? The acting was almost uniformly awful, Sokka is a bit jerkish, but he lightens up and is funny and intelligent! Not a useless tool that does nothing.

The movie was nowhere near different enough - that was exactly the main problem. It tried to compress a whole season of story into less than 2 hours without changing any of the major plot points, and ended up with an incoherent, illogical, poorly paced, exposition-laden mess. I would have been thrilled if they had changed more and actually been able to tell a decent story in the time they had (which should have been more than an hour and 45 minutes - kids sit through the Harry Potter films just fine).

Also, if you think you can say after one viewing of the movie that the race issue "wasn't a problem in the least," you're not really grasping the problem people had with it in the first place.

My experience with Harry Potter, James Bond and A Series of Unfortunate Events (just to name a few) disagrees. While I certainly missed the material that was lost in the transition, the movies survived, or were sometimes even better for changes to the story. So please, don't go telling me that I'm unimaginative and can't handle surprises or change. Assigning shallow motives to people who disagree with you won't help your case.

Yeah, change isn't ALWAYS good. In this case, it's like changing a diamond into a turd.

@Byemus more like turning a diamond into a gaping maw that destroys joy

They could've at least pronounced the names right. I don't care if the movie used the "correct" pronunciation. You're making an adaptation of a show, so why would you change the main character's name?

I can understand that someone might like a movie that others dislike (there was no need to go there theclam5678) but I have to disagree about race. It's an issue because Shyamalan, whether he intended to or not, made it one. This is not a post-racial world and looking at what people were given what roles in this movie suggests that race is still an issue.

I disagree noone expects it to be a perfect replica of the series, however we "were" expecting Avatar the last airbender coming to life! It seems to me he cut the most interesting traits of the characters (ie. Happy go lucky Aang, Comic Relief but still intelligen Sokka, Passionate Kataara, Tea loving Iroh :(, ect.) Changed their nmes and tried to pass it off to us as the characters we love! And my little sisters would have been fine sitting down for a longer amount of time watching an adaption of one of their favorite cartoons. This was a let down to a lot of fans!
