Best Self-Insert fic, no doubt

Just read it. What I liked most about this fic is that it doesn't "cheat". His character is just himself, and his dialogue is written on the spot, in a stream-of-consciousness style, and never looking stuff up, just from memory, only to switch sides and make canon characters react to it, with canon data. It just works amazingly and creates the best dialogue I've seen in a fic of this kind. It does make the pacing odd sometimes, though, because while the ending was planned, conversations are thought on the spot and the protagonist often fucks up. The author is pretty witty himself, so it's hilarious most of the way through.

Moving on, I don't know if he did it on purpose, but the fic is also a chilling meta-commentary on fanfiction and self-inserts, and how people use it to befriend fictional characters, both readers and writers. It gets really emotional after a while, if you've read a lot of fanfics.

Now, I know I said the character is just himself, but he does get wandless magic, that thankfully only ever uses once for plot-related reasons (and is reasonably balanced by making him faint whenever he uses it and being atrocious at dueling), because even the author admitted it turned his character into a gary stu. Still, as I said it's not that important, so just read it.
