Completely agree with both of your points, and second the recommendation. Like HPMOR, the main character is the worst part of the series, but thanks to his personality the plot can move on. It's kind of a lazy plot device when used so much, but that's about the only flaw it has. Superb OC characters, twists, mysteries and an interesting main plot that starts after book 2.

This series was great!
Where do I begin? The characters were enjoyable and believable. The plot is interesting and perfectly emulates the actually Harry Potter series. If I have one complaint, it is that after book one, Albus is stuck acting like Harry from book five (kind of a jerk). but all in all, a great read.
