A deeply satisfying arcade shooter

When I first heard about Gunslinger, I was both excited to see the newest addition to the Call of Juarez series, but also worried that it might flop to the degree of The Cartel, especially with the changes in gameplay and art style. Now, having played it myself, I can safely conclude that Techland's bold decisions have payed off - and boy have they payed off.

STORY: It's more of an excuse plot really, but this is a fairly intricate plot for this genre especially. You play as Silas Greaves, bounty hunter, in the wild tales he himself narrates. Over thirty years before his two other brothers were killed by a band of famous outlaws, and he starts a rampage of revenge (and bounty hunting) to bring them to justice. He also suspects one of the killers was hiding in the bar he moved in, and the game gives out subtle clues as to whether Silas has found his target through very nice comic-book style cutscenes.

GRAPHICS: Chrome Engine always delivers stunning landscapes, and Chrome Engine 5 is no exception - looking down a cliff into a colorful canyon is a beautiful sight. Artistically, the environment is drawn in a pseudo-cel shaded way, there's lots of intense colors, and the blood squirting out from a kill is exaggerated and deliciously satisfying. Technically, the animations are superior to the previous iterations (especially since you can't see your crudely animated body anymore huhehue), the guns look much more detailed, the shading is very nice, and the models overall look pretty. It's not the best looking game, but it is very good looking.

SOUND: The dialogue is hilarious and brilliant. Silas' occasional interruptions and ways to bring the listeners to pay attention are just the icing on the cake. The guns sound much more ferocious, especially in bullet time. The music, while some is recycled from previous games, is still great.

GAMEPLAY: And now for the best bit about this game. The gunplay is awesome and satisfying, something we haven't had in a while. It's almost some sort of Max Payne Western: The FPS. The duels are also intense, dramatic and incredibly rewarding once you nail that headshot onto your opponent, squirting cartoonish blood all over the place. Progressing through the levels makes it even more rewarding to kill everyone in sight as a badass, bullet dodging gunslinger. Arcade and Duel mode are also damn sweet.

9/10
