I'm gonna have to oppose the inclusion of the prequels as a Dork Age. For something to qualify as a Dork Age, it must fulfill the following criteria:

1. It has to be a critical and financial disappointment

2. Any changes it brought to the series must be undone by later installments

3. Whenever it's referenced by other entries, it has to be done in a negative manner.

I understand the prequels are controversial, just not to the same extent thanks o the sequels, but we must give them fair representation and avoid heavily opinionated writing. What do you think?

  • Vindicated by History: The Prequel Trilogy movies in general (even The Phantom Menace) have become this to an extent in recent years to people with a lukewarm or negative opinion of the Sequel Trilogy movies. While they still get a sizable amount of criticism, a lot of fans feel like the perceived flaws of the Sequels makes the Prequel trilogy look retroactively better in comparison.

I don't know about this. Even if you were to make an argument that the prequels have been Vindicated by History (which is pretty debatable), this entry doesn't really explain why fans' opinions of them have shifted, and it says more about negative opinions of the sequels than positive opinions of the prequels.

Setting aside my own opinions on Star Wars: I think it's pretty questionable to suggest that the prequels were better-received than the sequels. The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones got mixed-to-bad reviews when they were released, and they're still near-universally regarded as the worst films in the series. The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi may have their detractors, but they both got rave reviews from critics, and The Force Awakens is still widely regarded as one of the better movies in the series. The Last Jedi may have fallen victim to Critical Dissonance, but I'd say it was more divisive among fans than outright hated; at the very least, it has far more ardent defenders than The Phantom Menace or Attack of the Clones ever had in their day.

Honestly, it only counts as Vindicated by History if you accept So Bad, It's Good Memetic Mutation to be vindication.

I dunno about this one.

The prequels were controversial in their day, but nowadays we realize how innovative they were. The sequels, on the other hand, are getting mixed reviews from audiences but significantly better feedback from critics.

My main point is: you would have to search hard to find someone who downright hates the prequels. They have their place in the saga now and most people will respect them. We shall leave it at that.

The Prequels are legitimately a lot more positively regarded than when they came out, but that entry lends undue weight to the idea that criticism of the Sequels is the main reason for this.

^ Absolutely agree. The Sequels tend to be disliked by prequel fans and loved by OT fans, but the prequels are disliked by some Original Trilogy fans.

The main point is that the prequels ARE Vindicated by History, which is what this discussion is about.

I'm inclined to disagree.

While I'd agree that there's less vitriol aimed at the prequels, that's more because they're just less... relevant. There's less vitriol because there's less attention. The prequels have always had defenders. I don't believe that anyone has come around on them, but fewer people outright criticize them because they... kinda don't matter. Except as Snark Bait and meme-fodder.

Could we maybe cut down on the Complaining About People Liking The Show on here? I think we can say "The vast majority of SW fans hate the prequels" without "And those that don't are stupid and bad".

I have recently made edits removing most of that. I also mentioned that a lot of people do really like the prequels and that a lot of reasonable people think they are commendable films.

All these "Some people think X character is a Sue and this is a controversial topic people argue over" entries on the page, especially centered around whether Rey is a Mary Sue or not, aren't exactly making the page look good.

I understand wanting to avoid an Edit War, but can we at least post brief "For" and "Against" arguments on these issues?

Given the massive amount of entries under Ensemble Darkhorse and from the many works in the series, shouldn't a Franchise-wide page for Fan F Avorite and Ensemble Darkhorse be created? And shouldn't the two folders under Scrappy in Films and Video Games be merged into a single Franchise Scrappy page?

Maybe, but I would clean the list up a bit. Several main characters are on there; they don't belong.

Given there's a TRS on Fan Favorite that seems to be leaning very heavily towards "cut this," I wouldn't make a page for that yet...
