I've taken a look at the history of the Unintentionally Unsympathetic entry. It clearly has a place here, though I do think the wording can be changed. I think that the main thing that made quite a few viewers offended at Jen is that she was claiming (or at least strongly implying) that she is much better at controlling her anger than Bruce because her life is that much harder. As people have mentioned, this completely minimizes Bruce's struggles in getting where he is now (including a suicidal episode).
Though I realize this was not the intention of the writers or even Jen (it's never made clear if she knows those details about Bruce's past), this still counts as UU because she is never challenged on this, and Bruce just seems to accept this statement despite it being highly insulting. It's not really "bad faith" to say that, that's an implication the dialogue unintentionally makes. This was a major criticism from many fans from the first episode, and though there are decent counterarguments, I think it is dishonest to just pretend it doesn't exist here. If anything, this is at least an example of Broken Base (which cannot be added for at least another month or so) or Don't Shoot the Message.
Edited by ovskii Hide / Show RepliesUnintentionally Unsympathetic has own discussion, you'll likely get more feedback there.
TroperWall / WikiMagic CleanupOK now that the show's over we REALLY need to actually address what's happening with this page. It's legitimately incomplete, regardless of which side of the fence you fall on
Hide / Show RepliesI mean... that's not f***ing good enough as an answer, it's barely an answer. You can't just leave it locked and incomplete forever and pretend like that's at all a viable option.
<Moderator headband on>
It's now unlocked. Don't treat this as a licence to use the page as a platform to bitch about the film, let alone the film's politics. Unless you want to be banned, of course.
Have I made myself very clear?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAbsolutely. I was mostly interested in trivial entries/stuff that doesn't have to do with the Meta-reactions anyways. Thank you!
One thing I've seen come up after the finale is that the VFX artist jokes can be at least a bit wince-inducing, since they're relatively soon after the news of Marvel VFX artists being overworked. That sounds like it could go under Harsher in Hindsight except for the hindsight part, since the episode aired after that news. Not sure what the alternative would be.
My stories on AO3. Hide / Show RepliesAdded it under Harsher in Hindsight, because the only other category I could see it is Funny Aneurism and that doesn't account for the fact that Marvel was technically blindsided by the reports.
Can we add a designated hero for Jen for the multiple times when she does something immoral and illegal like catfishing a guy in episode 4, throwing a car at Daredevil when that could have very easily killed him, and had the magician guy in episode 4 sign a cease and desist order by threatening him with a demon
Hide / Show RepliesCan we also add one for Wong too because he kidnapped Emil and forced to fight against his will
Whenever the edit lock comes down/if the mods are reading this, I think that this definitely applies:
Harsher in Hindsight: The man who was shown in the trailers as being incredibly receptive to being manhandled by She-Hulk, as well as Josh's seeming interest in Jen, were both received very well by the fandom as men who appreciated Jen for who she was. Cut to the series' air, where the former rejected her upon changing back to her normal form, and the latter is a member of the incel expy group Intelligencia who recorded revenge porn of her without her constent and aired it in front of her coworkers and family.
Since this page is locked. Could the admins add a few more memes to the Memetic Mutation? Like these.
- She-Hulk Twerking
- Saul Goodman cameo
I think that the She-Hulk twerk, no matter how neutrally/positively worded, is just begging to be flame-edited over and over ad nasueum, more than it's worth in effort to keep clean then any merit of including it.
Definitely Saul though, and would even say that Friendly Fandoms (or its evil cousin, Duelling Fandoms) would apply there.
Can the admins add an entry for Portmanteau Couple Name for Matt/Jen (I've seen She-Devil float around on a social media quite a bit) and an Ensemble Dark Horse entry for Madisynn after the one-month rule gets passed?
Hide / Show RepliesShould we add Nightmare Fuel for the Hulk King leak in episode 8? Not only because of what the Intelligencia revealed about Jen's love life in front of everyone, but also her reaction to this. I believe it warrants an example here.
Hide / Show RepliesI more than second this, though I feel like it easily belongs under Adult Fear, possibly more than NF (though both certainly work).
Can we add unintentionally unsympathetic for the scene when She-Hulks claim that she is dealing with more anger than her cousin Bruce Banner. Considering that the army chased him, he tried to kill himself and many of his friends died
Hide / Show RepliesSomebody already tried adding that trope. Both the Clean-up thread and the ATT thread agree that that isn’t an example of Unintentionally Unsympathetic.
Edited by Sugarp1e1 Ryoko. It should be added, but several people in the discussion said it should be cut. Thus, it wasn't re-added despite the argument of others.
Edited by Richardkriener0You know, you don't need to be snotty about it.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDuring this temporary lock, can the administrators add this trope?
Hilarious in Hindsight: A brief Freeze-Frame Bonus in Episode 2 teased Wolverine being introduced into the series by mentioning a man with metal claws was seen at a bar. A few weeks later, Ryan Reynolds confirmed that the upcoming Deadpool 3 will feature the famous mutant, reprised by Hugh Jackman!
