, it's generally seen as an Even Better Sequel by the gaming world as a whole. It has higher overall scores both critically and among users.
The closest thing to support for Contested Sequel in the ATT topic is someone claiming that there was a backlash when the game first came out because the story wasn't as good, but the game overall was better and even most of those claiming that it wasn't as good then have settled on it being an Even Better Sequel.

I kept the Contested Sequel entry due to not wanting to pick a side, but I'm firmly in the Even Better Sequel camp myself. The only thing one can really hold from 1 above 2 is that 1 was a much simpler and Disney-focused story that maybe had a more innocent charm to it than the more serious and complex 2. But that's really pushing it I think.
I don't think anybody's going to deny that I was probably a better in the story department just for being simpler (and more tightly written), but as a whole II is still considered superior.

Yeah, that's pretty much the consensus. II (especially its Final Mix, which fixed several complaints about the game) is considered even better than the first game in all regards except for story, as KH2 started the Broken Base concerning the series narrative (despite Chain of Memories committing the Franchise Original Sin.) It's the story aspect that really divides fans and makes it a Contested Sequel for them. Since critics are more likely to focus on the gameplay than the story, they are less contested in their views, hence the Critical Dissonance trope.
I like KH and KH2 about equally, myself.

Except Critical Dissonance doesn't really seem to apply, either. All this talk about "the fans like the first one better" and yet both Metacritic and Game FA Qs' user reviews have KHII as being better reviewed.
And readding something before discussion is completed is an edit war, and potentially bannable. Just an FYI.

So... will a decision be made on this? It seems everyone here agrees that KHII is the Even Better Sequel overall, and l would also agree that Critical Dissonance does not fit this game.
I think it can go in. Every objective measure of reception points to Even Better Sequel with only a small Vocal Minority claiming otherwise.

Okay, so should I restore the Even Better Sequel entry? Also, what do we do about Critical Dissonance? And currently, the actual page for Contested Sequel also lists KHII in there, so should it be removed from there?
Yes to all. Critical Dissonance is inaccurate, since I couldn't even find a user reviews indicating that KHII was better, and even if it was, both games were considered overall "very good" by both user and critical reviews. If Critical Dissonance cataloged every time a work didn't have precisely the same user reviews as critical reviews, it would essentially be meaningless.
And it seems that all the other changes are based on this false claim of Critical Dissonance.

People are arguing over Contested Sequel and Even Better Sequel. These tropes are mutually exclusive and cannot both be posted on the page.
- Contested Sequel: This game is one of the most definitive examples of the trope, as there are just as many fans who claim the series grew the beard here as there are fans who claim that it jumped the shark. The action was expanded upon, with new abilities like "merging" with teammates, and just an overall greater focus on the action. On the other hand, the platforming elements and secret out-of-the-way treasure chests were greatly reduced. Some say Kingdom Hearts II is a great sequel and use the action, characters and story as their main argument, others argue that part of what made the first game so great is gone, complaining about the less exploratory level design and accusing the game of having a weaker and more complicated story in which the characters they love just don't seem to be themselves.
- Even Better Sequel: Largely considered this gameplay-wise, even if not story-wise. In fact, when GameFAQs board members were polled on which games in the series handled various aspects the best, KHII won in most categories
except story- and script-related ones.
