It played up the violence, played down the poetry, and paraded posterized/solarized live action (and/or reference frame blowups xerographed directly onto animation cels) as if it were real rotoscoping. Dragging viewers through the mud at the bottom of "Uncanny Canyon" in the process.
I saw this as a kid in the late 70's early 1980's. I had a Lord of the Rings Coloring book from this movie. I'm pondering if it's Misaimed Marketing - the movie was pretty rough for a kid.
