The best episode crowner for Rebels is full of spam, needs attention

I'm putting this here because I doubt anyone will see it on the relevant character pages. Spoiler tags just in case anyone somehow missed the big reveal halfway through Season 3 that's more or less out in the open as of Season 4:

Should we go ahead and move Kallus's character entry to the Rebel Intelligence page? Like I said above, the fact that they've openly defected from the Empire is pretty much an open secret in the fandom at this point. Not to mention having their tropes split between his folder on COMPNOR and a "Fulcrum II (MAJOR SPOILERS)" folder on Rebel Intelligence is more than a little awkward.

EDIT: Okay, scratch that, this character is stretched across THREE pages - all three Fulcrums have folders on Rebel Intelligence with no content except redirects to Rebel Cells, and then two out of those three folders have no content except redirects either - Fulcrum I goes to Ahsoka's page and Fulcrum III goes to the Rogue One page.

So only Kallus's folder has actual content, and it's marked with a big "SPOILER Character", and only contains half of their tropes, with the remainder being behind a redirect to Kallus's other folder on COMPNOR, which itself contains a spoiler-tagged redirect to Rebel Cells and an unspoilered "click to see them in Season 4" image which clearly shows them in a rebel uniform. This whole thing is a mess.

Should we do something about spoilers, like clean them up? We have spoilers from way back in Season 1, and they've been expanded on since to the point that they're not really spoilers anymore. Perhaps right now, we should just spoiler tag Season 3. Maybe include the wham scenes like Kanan's blinding, Ahsoka walking into the Temple, and possibly Ezra opening the Sith Holocron.

Not sure what these should be.

  • Pragmatic Villainy / Villains Out Shopping: Given the series's focus on one backwater planet (Lothal) as a microcosm of how the Galactic Civil War is playing out across the galaxy at the local level, there's actually a fair amount of focus on the Imperials doing relatively mundane things which are part of the day-to-day routine of running a government and maintaining economic quotas. Instead of an endless parade of superweapons and diabolical plots each week, the local Imperial garrison actually has mundane tasks like "make sure local fruit vendors have registered licenses with the Empire, and arrest them if they don't". A recurring element in the background is how the Empire's rule has affected day-to-day life on Lothal, which was once a backwater farming planet. The Empire's military-industrial complex has built a large Sienar Fleet Systems TIE fighter factory on Lothal now, and they're aggressively strip-mining local resources to support it, edging out the small scale miners. They're also repeatedly shown pushing out the remaining independent farm owners, either by pressuring them to sell their land or outright seizing it, so they can set up more productive large-scale farms to meet the Five Year Plan's quota. This has led to displaced farmers forming several shantytowns in the outlying areas, dubbed "Tarkintowns". This actually ties in with Biggs's conversation with Luke in a deleted scene from A New Hope, where he mentions that the Empire is starting to nationalize farms in the Core Worlds, and it's only a matter of time before Luke's Uncle Owen is just a tenant farmer slaving away for the Empire.

This is, of course a spoiler.

I'm not sure whether it would fall under Call-back or something else, but in the second parter of when they sought out Rex, Wolf, and Gregor(Episode 3 I believe, or 2 if you don't count the season premiere), Kallus uses the phrase 'Intensify Forward Firepower' which was made famous by Admiral Piett at the battle of Endor.

A Bigger Bad has nothing to do with the conflict at hand. Palpatine is the reason there's a conflict in the first place, overthrowing his rule is the goal of the heroes; and he is The Man Behind the Man for every single imperial agent whom the rebels will have to face- tus he is still the Big Bad, regardless whether he actually appears in person or not. He didn't appear in Ep4 and only briefly in Ep5, but he was still the Big Bad, so why would it be any different here?

I'm the guy who launched Bigger Bad, and I can kind of see how Palpatine might be one if the show plays him a certain way - ie, similar to how the Indiana Jones movies use Hitler. If our bad guys (the Inquisitor et al) are nominally in Palpy's employ, but are mostly doing their own thing and making their own plans while he never shows up, I think we could have a valid case for him as Bigger Bad. If they're more directly getting their marching orders from him and/or he shows up in such a way that he's clearly being played as the ultimate threat, then he's probably in his regular Big Bad mode. Personally, I'd just wait for the show to actually air before sticking him under either trope.

The thing is, Hitler was just there to make the possibility of the bad guys winning more threatening. He could be relatively easily replaced by another dictator even a fictionous one, or removed entirely, and the plot of the movies wouldn't really change. Indy would still try to stop the bad guys, and still would've to go through the exact same challenges to get the artifact. Only difference is that it wouldn't be the nazis who're after him. Palpatine however is central to the plot of Star Wars in the time period of the series. Without him, there would be no conflct going on at all, he is the person responsible for the state the Galaxy is in, toppling his regime is the ultimate goal of the Rebels and he is behind every single imperial agent who will try to stop them. He just can't be detached from the story, even if he doesn't appear at all. Isn't that more Big Bad than Bigger Bad?

Again, I'd rather just table this discussion until we actually see the series and see how relevant Palpatine personally is to it. There are plenty of EU works set during the Empire era where he isn't, except as background noise.

Since Rebels is supposed to be about the Rebellion directly, I think it's very likely that Palpy will have enough involvement to be considered the ultimate Big Bad (at the very least, I think at least one ESB-esque "what is they bidding, my master?" scene with either him or Vader will probably happen at some point) - but again, I'd rather not make the call until we actually have a show to talk about, rather than just promotional material.

Frankly the only way I can see him as Bigger Bad, is during arcs where the rebels aren't fighting the Empire, but rather an independent antagonist/group of antagonists like the Hutts for example. He did play it like that in TCW during the Maul-arc, which ran completely separately from the main plot under his control. But you're probably right, it's best to wait and see.
