I’d like to add to the ‘We’re All Living in America’ section the fact that the Hebrew Wikipedia almost always has special sections in articles about countries/cities about the local Jewish population (like any other Hebrew-language encyclopædia, actually).

That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Suggestion for insertion of new trope. I am following TOW praxis so don't get mad please :). Here it is: [[GIFT]]: Discussed and downplayed. One of the rules of Wikipedia is to remain polite, and this rule appears to be enforced since the vast majority of Wikipedians do act politely. However, quite a few of them are way more intransigent than people you meet in real life.
Hide / Show RepliesThanks for the suggestion! Edit requests for locked pages go in this forum thread; the mods may not see discussion pages. (Oh, and single-word tropes use {{braces}} to link them — {{GIFT}} gives GIFT.)
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going."The pop-culture version of Wikipedia is overflowing with ridiculously phony and inaccurate information ("George W. Bush is a time-traveler from the year 3000 sent back in time to fight the Martians from the planet Venus!") Quite unlike the real-life version, it appears to have no blocking or vandalism policies whatsoever."
This seems to be a baseless attack on Wikipedia rather than an attempt to convey any useful/humorous information. Can it be removed please?
Hide / Show RepliesI think you didn't understood what that example meant... Read it again. It's not an attack, is a defense of wikipedia.
In a quest to erase natter from the face of earth.Could someone add [en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Lamest_edit_wars this] link to the Edit War trope?
Hide / Show RepliesSorry, I meant [[en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Lamest_edit_wars this]].
There is a forum thread; I'll ask there.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanFor reference, Septimus is headed here in FAQ, and non-Wiki Word links need the http:// bit. Also: I love reading that page!
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Entry under Common Knowledge is incorrect. Wikipedia does have a pretty robust blocking measures. The most common are wholesale blocking of certain I Ps or IP ranges (ironically these I Ps are usually from schools) from editing the Wikipedia while not registered. It prevents the usual sort of drive-by vandalism as registering (though free) take some time, and the vandalizing activities of registered users are easier to track and block.
There are also pages upon pages of policies detailing actions to be taken for vandalism. From warnings to blocking notices. Not to mention Wikipedia's main policies do discourage vandalism in that it encourages users to challenge and remove information not supported by an accompanying reference.
All of these, however, are still done by volunteers as there are no true "moderators" on Wikipedia.
Hide / Show Replies^The page says "the popcultural version of wikipedia doesn't seem to have vandalism policies, while the actual one has"
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanCan these be expanded upon, please?
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard Feynman Hide / Show RepliesThe Omniscient Council of Vagueness looks like a drama import risk.
Wikipedia Will Ruin Your Life should stay off the page. Tv Tropes Will Ruin Your Life is specific to us and we've already got the page quote to cover what that entry is trying to say.
In other words, only Sock Puppet needs expansion. The others can stay off the page.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanThe page now has a namespaced version here. Since this is locked and thus I can't redirect this page, can some moderator perhaps do it?
I now go by Graf von Tirol.WARNING TO ALL TROPERS The Italian version of Wikipedia is currently down. This is a form of protest against the paragraph 29 in the Wiretrapping Bill. In layman terms: anyone who is offended by a web article - ANY web article, including wikis and blogs, as long as it says something against specifically that person - may order a rectification. Said rectification must be posted within a few days, without extra comments, basically refuting the previous article; if the owners of the site don't comply, they must pay an high fee. The problem is the motivation. There is no one verifying if the article was offensive or not, no judge to verify an eventual defamation, which is legally perseguible; I just need to send a mail to any site where my name is mentioned, and order those articles to be taken down. Strangely enough, in these days there are a lot of scandals regarding our current political class. If this codicil were to be made effective, any Italian web news source could be subjected to control and censorship. Therefore, until new order, it.wikipedia.org is currently out of order; any page automatically redirects to an official notice of the italian community. Thanks for your attention.
Edited by Zoriax91 Hide / Show RepliesTime to put in a new trope (given the page's status a moderator will be the one to add it if and when it does get added):
- Banned In Italy: Thankfully not yet (it's merely hidden in protest), but if the country's anti-defamation law gets passed...
I wanted to add the following entry:
Schmuck Bait: The article on Denno Shenshi Porygon includes a link to a clip of one of the seizure-inducing bits of the episode.
Would it be cool to say Wikipedia is basically the Real Life page that has been Entry Pimped Beyond the Impossible?
The "Citation Needed" thing at Memetic Mutation looks a little... Off. Does anyone else see it? Or is it just me? >_<;
Hide / Show RepliesI do. I also know how to fix it.[citation needed]
Everyone Has An Important Job To DoIt should be noted that despite many of the pages being Not Safe for Work, that many parental control/web blocking software automatically allows every one of its pages.
Did you know that Wikipedia has a sense of humor? Neither did I up until just now. Check it out [1]
I feel we can squeeze many more tropes out this alone.
Well, the page is locked now.
I was planning on uploading the new version of the new logo (the image on the page is out of date), and if I get around to it can someone add it in?
Hide / Show RepliesSimilarly, isn't the entry for Xenofiction actually an example of Humans Through Alien Eyes? I'd like to fix that.
Am I the only one who's noticed a new, stealth meme in Wikipedia? Go to a celebrity/known person (Obama, for example, being the first one I noticed it on) and look at the alt-text/rollover text for their portrait. Basically, if gives a complete, literal description of the picture. Spotted it in a few pages now.
Just thought it was odd.
Edited by 203.45.61.202 Hide / Show RepliesIt's actually policy, for the benefit of people with image-free browsers.
I was going through the Internet Archive, and I found a paragraph that used to be on this page, and I think should have its information worked back in
- Given Wikipedia's ... role as a central information source, you can probably gain more info on the "what" of (for example) Star Trek from it than you can from actually watching the show. And, that's nice. Here?
- Here, you can get a glimmering of why the show is like that.
Is there a story behind that Oscar Wilde "quote?" Because right now I find it confusing and want to remove it.
Removed this item, because aside of violating natter rules, it's completely impertinent.
- Ironically TV Tropes would end up doing exactly this, eliminating the best page on the site and an Internet treasure.
