I find it quite amusing that "technological malfunction" is an "overused in Sci Fi plot device" and not an "overused in everything plot device". Tech malfunction is more like an undeniable reality of a story set in a rational world which is what makes it so common. I feel as if technology never malfunctioning would be far less realistic. Its the only thing Battlestar Galactica and National Lampoon's Vacation have in common aside from "People trying to get from one location to another", but I guess that's what happens when people get a little too broad with their tropes.
