I wonder if the real joke is that "never" is such a short period of time. Is there a trope for that?
I would assume the plan was devised by Edge. When Blunt says "Foolproof. No one will ever figure this out" he is not doing sarcastic retrospective on his own idea, but quoting what Edge said to him to sell the idea. Blunt assumed it would not work at all but had no other ideas to work with, and was pleasantly surprised by the results.
(I know, I'm replying to 12-year old comment.)
Regarding Agitated Item Stomping: I thought it was pretty obvious that Florence chomped the remote. If nothing else, her bare feet would've been pretty ineffective at stomping.
My name is Freezer and my anti-drug is porn. This would be pure Natter on the main page, but I don't actually see the problem with the argument that consciousness doesn't require life because undead things are conscious. Perhaps Max was reading it as an engineering question where I'm reading it as a philosophy question?
Pulling this for being unfortunately spoilery:
- Artistic License – Economics: Kornada's scheme would destroy Jean's economy twice over: First by lobotomizing 99% of the work force, reducing the productivity of the system to near zero, second by concentrating 95% of the world's money in one person's accounts, which would take so much cash flow out of the economy that the only way to restore it would be to restructure society so that most people's job would be to provide goods and services to Kornada. Evidence suggests that he isn't smart enough to understand this, and wouldn't care if he did.
- "The only way ... would be to restructure society so that most people's job would be to provide goods and services to Kornada." Given his utterly sociopathic, narcissistic character, Kornada probably sees this is a feature, not a bug. If you control all the money, you can basically name yourself King. (Assuming, that is, that someone doesn't shank you in a back alley somewhere.)
If someone would like to elaborate on the matter in broader detail on the Analysis page, though, that would be amazing and we would be totally grateful.
Stripped this off:
- Out-of-Character Alert: While investigating Mr. Kornada, Sam and the A.I.'s find out he owns robot factory #2, which makes non-Bowman style robots; it was originally set to be shut down, but with uncertainty surrounding the Bowman A.I.'s, it's been recalled and he's making millions on it. The A.I.'s think this is the plot, but Sam figures that Mr. Kornada has something else in mind, as he is way too greedy to settle for a measly 8 million credits.
...because I read the trope as relating to Spot the Imposter situations specifically, and this doesn't fit.
I think that Florence being "kidnapped" (at least) twice now qualifies her for Damsel in Distress, though perhaps Hypnotize the Princess would be more appropriate, given that they usually use her "off" button to knock her out to do it.
Thoughts? Better characterizations?
Hide / Show RepliesNot sure on the DID thing, but I don't think it qualifies for Hypnotize the Princess. Shutting her off via the control isn't compelling her to do anything but go unconscious, and that's really just a nonviolent variation of Tap on the Head.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpNot sure what trope applies to this, but - am I the only person somewhat creeped out by the Mayor as of late? Not only did she order Florence into that french maid outfit, she apparently didn't think anything of ordering her OUT of it - with no other clothes available - and then ordering her out into public!
I mean, if this were porn, that would be kind of kinky, but...poor Florence.
Hide / Show RepliesAs far as I can tell, that seems to be Mark's punctuation to emphasize the fact that, as far as the mayor is concerned, an AI is no more than a tool to be used by humans. Florence might as well be a hammer, and has no more need of clothes than a hammer. I don't know if some already existing trope addresses this kind of attitude.
Edited by 69.172.221.6I was considering the idea that the police chief sort of needs an entry in "characters" now, and Eleanor by association. I didn't do one. Putting one entry for the chief under "others" and one for Eleanor under "robots" seems wrong because the two characters are not very separable, but putting just one combined entry under "others" didn't quite seem right, either. Any thoughts?
Given Max's desire for pushing AI rights, I suspect that Make the Dog Testify may apply at some point (in another decade or so), so I'm posting this as a reminder of the trope should the situation come up.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpI used Crazy Enough to Work primarily because that's what was suggested as the appropriate trope in Lost And Found. I know that type of exchange isn't unique to Freefall.
Edited by Nohbody All your safe space are belong to Trump Hide / Show RepliesEven if there is a trope, though, Crazy Enough to Work can't be it. It is (a) a Stock Phrase (b) used to lampshade Zany Schemes, and #1712 involves neither the phrase nor any scheme. It's closer to Actually Pretty Funny than anything else, but APF is apparently something to do with villains being funny rather than unexpected wit.
Regarding the following entry for Florence, on Characters.Freefall:
I don't see how any of that applies to Flo. Tropers/Tambov333 mentions Max Post in his edit reason for putting the line back in after I deleted it, but that was purely by accident, hardly her kicking his ass. The other two with whom she's been in physical conflict are Varroa (who's hardly a model of health to start with), and Helix, who has all the combat knowledge of a bowl of tapioca pudding (well, the Hollywood version of tapioca pudding, anyway, given his likely viewing habits) and is further impaired by the human safeguards the robot population agreed to apply to Florence.
And Genius Bruiser doesn't even apply at all, no matter how loosely you define the whole "asskicking" thing to slip in the other two tropes (which I left in for now, but I still don't think they apply to her). She is weaker than a similarly sized human, as Mark mentioned on one of the forums (IIRC).
Edited by Nohbody All your safe space are belong to Trump Hide / Show RepliesFlorence is not at all a physical badass, and that's certainly not a key element of her characterization. I agree with the removal.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Technobabble/Layman's Terms:
Mark Stanely actually worked at Fermi as an instrument tech and was on nuclear submarines. So his "technobabble" is pretty accurate on real world items.
Hide / Show RepliesDoes Mark have that written somewhere? I'm curious to his background, it seems he works at a nuclear powerplant in Detroit with a background in particle physics. Only curious for the sake of "That's one heck of an author!"
Actually, he was a surface puke, not a bubblehead.
Two posts on the subject I can find in a quickie search of the Nice forums:

As to what he did, other than in the Engineering Department I don't recall any specifics mentioned, and I don't have all day to search through 4K posts in the FF forum. :P
Edited by Nohbody All your safe space are belong to TrumpMark has mentioned he was at Fermi when FF was in print and is referenced in the very limited FF print copy.
I seem to remember him mentioning he was was working with nukes, but can't recall where I heard it.
About Flo's MSG status...
Flo has fans.
Their PSL has become a Memetic Mutation.
Ergo, Flo is a MSG.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
MSG is a subjective trope?

Edited by Fighteer "It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Removed from the Mother Nature, Father Science entry:
Who [[http://freefall.purrsia.com/ff1200/fv01162.htm shows signs]] of {{SRMD}}.
There's no "SRMD" trope, and nothing even hinting at what the non-initialized version could be. Please expand, if possible.
All your safe space are belong to Trump Hide / Show RepliesThe wick needs to go to the right article. Please avoid initialisms.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Ok
Please join these multinational petitions against ACTA. Sign up now. Every voice counts.Does 1931◊ really count as an example of My God, What Have I Done?? I don't think so, but I'm not certain enough of that to just zap the entry. Florence most certainly isn't misguided, she knew exactly what she was doing, what the results would be, and that she can ultimately reverse it (so no permanent loss).
All your safe space are belong to Trump Hide / Show RepliesJust seems like normal regrets to me, plus a case of overenthusiastic troping. Zap away.
Edited by Fighteer "It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I don't get how Edge being a Heroic Sociopath is supposed to be a spoiler. There's nothing in that statement that reveals any plot elements. Calling his actions a Heel–Face Turn is kind of begging the question, as he was never a villain to begin with, just very self-centered.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!" Hide / Show RepliesNever mind that, I'm not sure how Edge even qualifies for HS. At the least, he's not "being as evil as possible along the way". Self-centered? Yeah. Dickheaded? Sure. But simply being a selfish jerkass isn't enough, in and of itself, to qualify as being evil. It's not like he's stealing lollipops from babies, punting puppies, or anything like that.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpOn further thought, yeah you're right about the sociopath thing. I'm still not sure I can wrap my head around Edge qualifying as an HS, but I won't contest the entry, either.
All your safe space are belong to TrumpHeel–Face Turn is not a plot element?
Please join these multinational petitions against ACTA. Sign up now. Every voice counts. No, Edge was never a villain, so he can't have a Heel–Face Turn.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Never was a villain???
What is this I dont even
None of the robots are villains, not explicitly. Being a Jerkass and interpreting your programming oddly do not make you an antagonist. Anyway, Edge never "turned" from anything. He made a decision that he didn't want to be lobotomized and took the sticky notes to Florence. From the perspective of tropology, he's still a Jerkass.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"
Call for help: In this strip, in particular the last panel, I could've sworn there was a trope that described the "foolproof plan" thing. Nothing comes to mind, though, and throwing it out to Lost And Found didn't really call up anything that fit, though there were a bunch of tropes regarding failed "foolproof" plans mentioned.
The tropes, so y'all don't have to dig it up on LAF:
Any ideas? I'm willing to entertain "you're delusional" as an option, by the way. :P
