This material seems unnecessary and review-like. In terms of potholing of "understatement" being a problem, that could be resolved with a comment asking folks not to in the event this does go back to the end of the main text.

I agree. It's unnecessary, opinionated, and we were supposed to keep opinions out of the main/work and character pages, IICR.
And about the comment, well, I'm afraid that there're people out there who tend to ignore them and just shoehorn the sinkhole. Should they be reported on sight?
Hey, is Horton's name supposed to be a reference to Horton Hears a Who!? I know on the surface the book is metaphorically about a different period American can of worms but YMMV that thematically it's in the same country as the themes The New Colossus is covering.
