  • Alternate Universe: This games placement in the timeline was officially concurrent with the events of Black 2 and White 2. However they also take place around the same time or before Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, despite the fact that Ruby and Sapphire happened at least 6 or more years before Black 2 and White 2. This has retconned this game into a timeline splinter. Fan theories assume that there may be 3 or more timelines in the Pokemon game series verse, not even counting all the spinoffs and adaptations.

I am pretty sure that the "around the same time or before" was not confirmed officially by far.

"You can give tips to certain NPCs that do services for you to make them happier. There's no indication that this benefits you in any way, so this trope would have to apply for you to do it in the first place. As it turns out, the chances of encountering Shiny Pokémon get higher the more you tip people."

Has this EVER been actually statistically confirmed? this whole rumor has been floating around the page ever since the game came out.

As far as I know, it is not confirmed. That's why it's in the Urban Legend of Zelda entry in Trivia.

With the 1.2 Patch, I noticed some things about the Elite Four when I replayed the game from scratch on my other cart. Can anyone confirm these? 1. Malva's antagonistic dialogue is removed, she is no longer: annoyed with you, wants to burn you where you stand, and call you a runt. Instead, she says she is busy and she's a Holo Caster star. 2. Siebold has been nerfed to 1 Full Restore rather than the 2 Full Restores everyone else has. Probable reason: My God that Gyarados. Even overleveling it by 10, it was really scary.

Wow, I think they also removed some of the getting crap past the radar moments. Like the "My Emolga wants to shock your Dedenne" line. I tried going back, reloading, flying out, but no matter how much I walked past the lovers they will always use the "My Emolga wants to be with your Dedenne forever" line. I'll try again.

On the Malva thing- she's less antagonistic the first time you beat her. Was it your first time beating her? I beat the Elite Four the first time long before the patch came out and she never said the line about burning you and talked about being a busy Holo Caster star. I think it changes after you find out about her being formerly with Team Flare in the Looker Bureau subplot.

Regarding the edit war under Broken Streak, I think this wording is the best:

  • Whenever a region has a Rock-type gym, it's the first one the player faces. For the first time, the region's Rock Gym Leader is NOT the first badge acquired, but the second.

The current wording (and the initial wording) is less clear that it is only referring to games that have Rock gyms.

So let me get this straight. The reasoning for including that entry is because the Johto and Unova regions don't even HAVE a Rock gym, so they don't count at all?

The fact that there isn't a Rock gym in those regions until at least the post-game should only prove that this entry can't apply because there have already been two games that broke that tradition of having a Rock gym as the first on your adventure.

OK, yes, I would agree that the above wording- pointing out ONLY the games that actually have rock type gyms and not the entire franchise- makes sense. That doesn't mean the entry applies to this trope for the franchise though.

I just read Broken Streak, and since the work Pokémon X and Y is the example, the trope shouldn't even be present on the page at all. It is, at best, a meta-example, and applies to the Pokémon videogame series, rather than X and Y specifically.

Improbable Power Discrepancy: The Battle Maison is a post-game facility that only people who have beaten the Pokémon League can enter. The trainer classes that can be fought include butlers, tourists and preschoolers. Some of them even have legendaries.

I suppose the Battle Institute and Maison is like a game show that only allows challengers who have beaten the Pokemon League to challenge. They let people from all walks of life try their luck to beat the challenger. (Perhaps there's a monetary reward for doing so, which is why they try so hard.) The protagonist is likely supposed to be THAT GOOD, since they are expected to get a huge streak, before their streak is cut short by their own mistakes, luck on the opponents ("hax"), or by the most likely of trainers to beat them, the more seasoned and "pro" Veterans and Chatelaines with their legendaries.

Still counts as an example, due to the fact that trainer classes like Preschoolers aren't usually known to have Pokémon that powerful (or even legendaries, for that matter).

Well I wasn't trying to argue removal of the entry. As far as I know it's still there. I was just putting up a WMG type thing.

Only Veterans and Battle Chatelaines have legendaries, though. Preschoolers and Lass trainers (for example) generally field weaker Pokemon compared to Ace Trainers, for example; and they kind of appear a lot less after the 30th win.

Chekhov's Hobby: Zigzagged. While it's stated in the beginning that the player's mom is a former Rhyhorn racer, there's no indication that that the player is any good at it. Later, however, it seems he or she can at least ride one, as he's able to handle one Route 9 rather easily. (This isn't the only time you get to ride a Pokémon in the game, and it might not be the first, but it will be the first one you can steer, and there's no real trick to it; you get the idea that mom might have given him or her pointers.)

I really don't agree with this trope. I find the writing to be somewhat subjective, and I think since that the NPC you talk to at the start of each area tells you that you can only cross via Rhyhorn or Mamoswine, it'd be safe to assume that he tells that to EVERY traveler. Since there's no evidence or suggetions in the game that your mother gives you any tips on riding pokemon, that can't really apply.

I suppose the game doesn't say: 1. The protagonist is good at it. 2. The protagonist rides Pokemon as a hobby.

Besides, the riding sequences don't show in any way that the protagonist is better than the average rider, so I agree it doesn't really apply.

Hey guys, can anyone confirm if using Roar/Whirlwind in the wild causes a battle to end? It fails if the wild Pokemon does it (No more wasted effort, THANK ARCEUS.), but what about the other way around?

I'll try to check later outside of office, I have Dragon Tail on my Steelix.

Prior to Gen 6, that's how it used to work and it was guaranteed even when your Pokemon is slower than the wild encounter (which can cause running to fail).

EDIT: Battle does not end with Dragon Tail. Strangely not against Sliggoo (I think it has an ability that doesn't allow fleeing?) But anyway, its description says battle ends. Is it a bug?

EDIT 2: Also hit Weepinbell with it and battle didn't end.

Since generation 5, Roar would only work if the opponent Pokémon's at least one level below yours. It would fail if the opponent Pokémon's the same level as yours or higher.

Someone care to explain to me the irony of a cotton candy pokemon knowing surf? Ok, yeah, cotton candy dissolves when wet. How is that ironic? It's not like Fairy pokemon have a weakness to water, and there's no indication anywhere in the Pokemon universe that suggests that Swirlix would die if it touches water. I don't see the irony of that.

I removed the Schizo Tech entry because even in Real Life, paper maps still exist and are still being used even with GPS. In addition, the X/Y Pokedex Does have a habitat map. Just Wiki Magic it back if it feels appropriate.

Archive:

  • Schizo Tech: Despite having advance technology like a holographic communicator, your character is still given a paper map and all it does is tell you where all the towns are. This is a step down from Black & White 2 where the pokedex functioned as a habitat list as well as a map.

Never say never, while it's sure as hell not happening at the moment it will eventually happen due to lack of GBA connectivity in the 3DS hardware. What most people tend to forget is that a major reason FR/LG and HG/SS happened was because the GBA and DS lacked the ability to transfer the GBC pokemon over to the later versions. Now that 3DS models phase out GBA completely combined with a newer generation of fans who can't get those games now (Without shelling out hundreds of dollars on Ebay or Amazon for a copy or playing it via emulator) means that somewhere down the road Gamefreak will most likely do a remake of R/S/E. That and the Mega Evolution will definitely expand soon enough and a remake will be perfect to add more to that.

It IS possible to get Pokemon from the GBA games here, though.

To do that, migrate to a fourth gen game, then to the fifth gen game, and then use the Poke Transfer app that comes with Pokemon Bank to transfer it to your game.

So, I recently just saw there are only seven boxes in-game, while we usually have them in the double digits. I think Game Freak intentionally did this, so, to store too many Pokemon, you'll be required to use the Pokemon Bank. What trope would this fall under?

Hide / Show Replies
NonoRobot Since: Sep, 2010

None, because you're wrong. You can unlock up to 31 boxes. Just fill up your boxes with at least one pokémon, and the rest will be unlocked (though, if you want to unlock boxes after the 15th, you'll need to beat the Ligue).

DRCEQ Since: Oct, 2009

Nono is right. The same thing happens in the previous games. In Black and White 2, you only start with 10, which grows to about 17 when you fill up 8 or 9 of them, and then it can grow even more than that.

I wanna add All Deaths Final as a trope for Pokemon X/Y as representative of the main universe core games. Does it fit?

1. This is the first time (?) a non-Ghost Pokemon came back from the dead. And it took the lives of a lot of other Pokemon. 2. If it even counts, considering the way people come Back from the Dead or Ret-Gone are usually in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon AND require truly godly powers to do so 3. Ash's "death" in the first movie doesn't count, since it's the anime?

Cel Shading:

Yes, the game has it. The cel-shaded lighting ramp is subtle and not frequently used, but it is indeed there, end of discussion. Proof: Examine the lighting on Pangoro's belly during its animations in trailer 5.

Besides, I happen to think we're defining the Cel Shading trope too narrowly, but that's potentially a matter for TRS.
