I'm not quite sure what trope to put this entry under:

“The onslaught of the quiet kids, which ended with a bookcase crushing them. While Cordy survived the bookcase, it concluded with her being able to speak. Or, well, throw fire at stuff.”

It was originally listed under Chekhov's Gun, but it's Not An Example of that trope; a Chekhov's Gun is something seemingly innocuous that actually sets up a major event or revelation later in the story, while the "onslaught of the quiet kids" is the opening scene of Our Darker Purpose and a pretty significant event in and of itself. I'm pretty sure we have some trope we can put that under, but the best ones I can think of right now are Downer Beginning and Inciting Incident, and it doesn't really fit either of those, either. It's a little too upbeat to be a Downer Beginning (sure, the protagonist's two closest friends turned on her, killed all of her other friends, and tried to kill her as well, but the protagonist herself survived and is now willing and able to kick the butts of those who wronged her), and it's a stretch to call it the Inciting Incident because it's not the absolute root cause of the story's conflict (that would be either the disappearance of the teachers, whatever made Edgewood a Boarding School of Horrors to begin with, or the shit the Bandit went through as a kid that led him to dream up the Crapsack World that the gameplay takes place in).

…On second thought, Traumatic Superpower Awakening probably fits. But does anyone have any better ideas?
