Doesn't For Want Of A Nail refer to minor changes in the past, that appear insignificant at first glance, like a missing nail? Nanoha's befriending of Fate (the actual befriending, not the unholy beating) was clearly regarded as the major turning point in Fate's life. If you take that away, it's only natural she would have turned out completely different.
